Near dark- 5:21 PM PST. Z9, Z 100-400 attached. The bird lurked over my wife's head again, and again we were rewarded with an ugly owl pellet just under the tree I photographed the owl in!
First shot is from about 50 feet, so I selected DX Crop Mode at 400mm. ISO 4000. The image is re-framed to vertical and cropped a bit as well.
Second shot is from about 25 feet, so FX mode, 400mm. No crop-large file to be sure. ISO 2200.
The DX Crop shot is good, IMO. The FX shot, from closer in is really nice, again IMHO!
Working on 3D looks. These shots were good choices, aside from the lack of light, for work on some techniques to further separate the subject from the surroundings, and at times busy background. #1 has a branch over the owl's head. The separation can be seen although the bird's neck seems to touch the branch in the neck region.

Thanx! It is hard Not to become an owl affection-ado! This guy is around most evenings. Does not bother our chickens or ducks, does not like Mexican Food so our Chihuahua is safe. We can point to where we think rats might be and we are rewarded with an owl pellet!

I have a Great Horned Owl in the tree behind my house. I hear him every evening but have yet to see him

We hear one around here, too. I understand that Great Horned Owls prey on Barred Owls. Perhaps that is why it hangs around us.
