I graduated from St. John's University in Jamaica, NY in 1970. Back then the team's name (Basketball, Baseball, etc.) was the St. John's Redmen. Sometime in the 1990s, St. John's caved to the pressure of the PC crowd of having a name Redmen. So, they changed their name to the Red Storm. How childish! How wimpy! Going back into history, St. John's picked the name Redmen not for any specific color of skin, but for the fact that they had/have red uniforms. The same reasoning gave the Syracuse teams the name of the Orangemen, because they wear orange uniforms.

Even now in the professional ranks, we have the Washington Commanders (aka Redskins), the Cleveland Guardians (aka Indians). For many many years, Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Redskins swore he would never ever change the name of his team. Wonder what got to him?

Now will the following teams also cave to the PC crowd?

Florida State Seminoles
Chicago Blackhawks
Vancouver Canucks (Canucks is supposed to be a derogatory term)
Kansas City Chiefs
Atlanta Braves
Cincinnati Reds

I hope my school does not change to the Syracuse Citrus Fruit.
We would not want to leave the other citrus fruits out of the designated spectrum. It could hurt they feelings.

"NY Giants"! What about them? How insulting that is to all the giants out there?

I lived in Pittsburgh PA for a time. There was a local baseball team that called themselves the 'Slugs'.

My father pitched for a farm team for the NY Giants in 1936. He was tall, but not extremely so. I have a photo of him with another player who looked to me like he was about 5'9".

Villanova class of '70 here. My brother got his associates degree from St. Johns while my father and another brother went to UConn and a sister-in-law graduated from Providence. So there was a lot of smack talk in the family during basketball season.

Sorry (not really) about the 2 losses we handed St. Johns this season.

As for the Cincinatti Reds...that name has nothing to do with native Ameticans. The original team name was the Red Stockings until they were kicked out of the league for selling beer in the stadium. When they returned they became the Reds, but changed to the Redlegs from1953 to 1959 because of the Red Scare due to McCarthyism. It was changed back to the Reds in 1959.

Cincinnati Reds is short for Redstockings. No problem there.

My father in law went to SJ undergrad and Law School.
He played some Bball undergrad. I always kidded him that SJ didn't have a winning season after the name change...

When they were excavating for a high school that I went to. they found early american native artifacts that suggested it was the site of a village. The teams became the Warriors. I always thought that it was cool to acknowledge the heritage of the land. PC prevailed and they are now the Cougars. Sad.

I think St. John's claim that Redmen doesn't reference skin color would be stronger if it weren't for the big red faced Indian on the shirt. As far as the Redskins were concerned, that name explicitly references skin color, which is different than the other Indian theme team names.

Notice the Native American with the headdress on the T-shirt! They probably wouldn’t have had to change to the “Red Storm” if they hadn’t pushed that.
Thanks for the history.

If you ask American Indians about sports teams using Indian terms, most will say that it’s much ado about nothing. Some American Indians even consider it an honor to have a sports team use their heritage in the team name. The only folks who are offended by such names are non-American-Indians with an agenda. If a name doesn't offend Tonto, why should it offend anyone else who has no relation to Tonto?

I must not have hit Send on my reply. Basically, I was agreeing with the other UHHer who also noticed the Chieftain in Headdress.

BTW, my wife, and friend graduated St. John’s in 1971. Education. I took a few classes there, too. And, until recently, my daughter, who originally taught chemistry there, was an acting dean there. Now she’s a dean at Molloy.

They are all bowing to the woke crowd. As a St. John's alum I agree with you completely. As I've stated before,
our universities spend their time worrying about this crap and whether men can have babies while the Chinese kids are concentrating on math, science etc.
They will eat our lunch one day soon.
etc..
