Sluggish Nikon D750

I picked up my Nikon D750 after not using it for several months and I find that it is working in a very sluggish way. It's showing "r41" and its only shooting when I press the back button focus and shutter button. Overall, the camera is very unresponsive. What's the problem and what do I do to fix it?

Why not just do a factory reset and see what that does...

r41 is not an error message. It is an indication of the remaining capacity of the buffer.

I do not recemmend a factory reset...at least not yet. What i do recommend is that you turn the camera off and remove the batteries for at least 30 minutes. Make sure they are fully charged. Then reinstall them and try your camera again. Also...try the flash and see if it works properly.

I had a Nikon camera that behaved very similar to this (not a D750). Its problem turned out to be something wrong on the main circuit board. If the battery change doesn't work, it will be time to call Nikon. They may want you to do a reset or perhaps try something else. Mine had to go back to NikonUSA for repair.

You might also try a different lens...or dismount and remount your lens.

This is a long shot, but go into the settings and see that that a1 and a2 are set to "Release". When set to "Focus", the camera will not shoot a picture unless it confirms that the autofocus has focused properly first, and this can cause a delay. If your camera fires instantly in the release mode, then perhaps you need to play around with your autofocus modes.

In addition to being set to focus priority, it appears "back button focus" has also been selected. From the OP's description, everything may be working properly ... except the photographer.

I would clean the contacts on the lens and camera since that is most likely the cause of the r41 message and may fix it.

Clueless! R41 is not an error message. It is a normal report of how many frames are available presently in the buffer.

Go to the Nikon website and put in your serial number. The shutter may be on recall. They had a recall and some were effected. Mine was.

Judging by what R41 is, try uploading your photos from your card & formatting. Make sure the battery is fully charged, you are not on any timers like self timer or exposure delay timer. Also, if it is a buffer & formatting the card doesn't work, try a different card. Let us know if any of this helps.

I think my camera is in need of repair. I've tried all the suggestions. (Thank you for the advice.) When I'm able to get the camera to work, the photos are very dark. I used a 50 mm 1.8 at 100 in a brightly lit room and the photos are barely visible.

Interesting that back in October 2020 you posted the same thing except it was “r22”. What did you learn that time?

What is your exposure compensation set at?

I'm just guessing, but if I were you I would check all my settings. You said in the OP that it only works when you press the back button focus and shutter button. That is not an issue. You just followed somebody's advice who happens to love BBF and convinced you that you couldn't live without it. So in the menu you changed a couple of settings. In addition you most likely are set for focus priority. That could delay the shutter until focus is achieved.
