This little [1-cm ] guy is an Elephant Weevil (ornithorrhinus cylindriotris). The larvae of this weevil is a borer in the stems and roots of Eucalyptus and various fruit trees. The adults are totally harmless. he was very active, sorry for poor pics.

That's one ugly bug! First one I've seen. Are they native to Australia?
Upon download & enlargement, your resolution is fine, but your DoF at f/2.8 is less than a millimeter deep.
My primary recommendation is to increase your illumination, which will allow shorter shutter duration (1/200-sec) and much smaller aperture (f/16 or so), which will dramatically deepen your DoF.
You can make a DIY diffuser to use with your camera's pop-flash:
