Someone told me she had been to the Riverwalk this morning, but the Great Blue Heron that had been hanging around wasn't there. She was told it moved to one of the ponds on the grounds of La Sierra University 1 mile north. There were ducks, coots and cormorants. I had been intending to go anyway to test my new Sony RX10iv bridge camera, so off I went. I got lots of pictures of the ducks, coots and cormorants in the main pond with the observation platform. I didn't see any birds using the passage under the bridge to the pond to the north, so I was going to leave when I decided to check out that pond north of the bridge anyway. Saw a few coots and turned to leave, but as I walked east to cross over to my car I saw movement on a bed of dead dried reeds near the bridge on the east side. I took a closer look and there was an immature heron sitting on the reeds, head and neck retracted, like either just waking up or getting ready for a nap in the afternoon sun. I took a bunch of shots of the heron. With the lens zoomed to 600 mm to get the feather details, I could only get about 1/3 of the bird in the frame when it stuck its head up to full height and looked around. So because I was hand holding, I did 4 shots of the bird from feet up to head, planning on trying panorama merging software to see if I could get the whole bird into one image.
Here are the results. First is the OOC image and then one with post-processing. It was merged in Light Room Classic, edited in Photo Shop then back to LrC for color temp adjustments. Considering that the RX10iv has a 1" sensor, the details are very good.

That little 1" sensor is better than I expected.

Thanks so much, I have to go back now to try my R7 & RF 100-500 on the water birds for the first time.

Even my old eyes can see the improvement in the processed image. Very nicely done Robert!

thanks very much

My main surprise was the idea of using the panorama app in light room worked so well on the bird the first time I tried it. With my luck, I expected the bird to do the Macarena or something and blur everything.

Even know where the joins are I can't find them. Miracles still happen.

Thank you very much.

Both how well the merging of four shots worked and the image quality of the Sony 1' sensor were a pleasant surprise.

72% change of showers tomorrow 4AM to 8PM here, so I will wait until Tuesday which is forecast for bright sunny day with a high around 60 to go back and see if the blue heron is still around or maybe some egrets etc. This time I will take my R7+RF 100-500L for that combo's first time after water birds.

Then to save my "Mad Money" towards a mirrorless full frame. I am looking at the R6II with 24 MP. My worst problem with my R7 & the 32.5MP sensor is at 77 I am not real steady handholding at times and those tiny pixels then have a case of motion blur unless the light is very good and I can use very high shutter speeds. At my favorite park with water feature the open side or direct sunlight is on the west, so if I go around 2-3PM and position myself on the west side of the pond the birds will be in full sun and I can crank the SS way up to cut out the motion blur. I may even take my tripod or monopod with a pistol grip ball head
