Plug it into the computer and follow any directions?
Did it not come with instructions?
It will show up as another drive on your computer.

Hello
You purchased it for a reason, provide some details
1. What will this new hardware be used for
2. Are you using this as an external drive or an internal drive?
3. Provide some details as to what you plan on using it for.

You didn't tell us much about what computer you have but if a PC just plug it into one of the USB ports and use it as another drive. Usage isn't any different than any USB flash drive or USB portable (spinning) HD drive. The SSD is just the technology used inside the T7.

It should come with a cable for plugging it into a USB port. After you do that, it should show up as a drive with a different letter on your computer.

Two things, and this is assuming a PC. 1. I always plug in such devices into a powered USB port. They have a symbol that looks like a battery on the label. It may not be necessary on this drive, but some devices such as external optical drives need a lot of power. 2. Never just yank it out of the computer without "ejecting" it first. I find the simplest way is to look for this icon on the task bar. There are other ways. If you don't do this, you may cause files on the drive to be corrupted, or perhaps the whole drive. It's a crapshoot.

Hello Alvin 3232---Sorry-Excuse my haste. I intend to use this SSD as an external drive for quicker startups and other perks on a 2 yr. old Dell desktop. I do not know what those other perks are but I'm sure I'll find out. Thank you for your response.

I wonder how an external USB drive would make for quicker startup. I could start a PC up with an external drive but only for older OS not with Windows XP or newer. USB drive could start up some version of Linux I think. To have quicker startup you have to use an internal SSD not external.

Good point. External drives are used primarily for storage, not for the operating system. (There may be some exceptions as you point out, but not in this scenario.) I would hope that a 2 year old Dell Desktop came with an SSD rather than a spinning HDD, but if the latter is the case, the OP should consider sending the SSD back and purchasing an internal SSD in the same configuration. Then the issue of cloning (or clean install of the OS) has to be discussed.

ESPECIALLY if the drive is set to Allow Delayed Write (Windows - when the computer is less busy).
If one unplugs it prior to ALL data being written, oh well....

Samsung has excellent software that you can download - no cost. It will copy your C drive onto the SSD, assuming that's your intention. The software is smart enough to know whether or not it's a Samsung SSD. Of course, you'll need an external dock for the SSD and a cable to connect it to your computer.

Using Samsung software the SSD has to be the same size or larger than the drive you want to clone.

I have a 2 tb ssd. You just plug it in and the computer reads it like it would a USB drive. No software needed. I tranferred about 1 tb of photo files and it was super fast. I back up everything, photos and word files, in externals drives.

I just plugged it in to the computer and use it just like a hard drive.
