Olympus XA test shots

I think my search for the perfect 35mm film pocket camera has just come to an end. Received a like-new XA with the A11 flash from a dealer in Japan a couple of weeks ago and put a test roll of Fujifilm Superia Xtra400 through it in one day, since I was curious what the camera could do. Went to our local township park where I test a lot of my cameras since it allows me repetitive shots of the same subjects from different cameras/lenses. Fell in love with this beautifully engineered little 8 oz tool pretty quickly. Advantages: sliding cover keeps pocket crud off the lens. Selectable apertures from f2.8-f22. A +1.5 ev comp lever for those backlit shots. A truly lovely lens.Easy to use flash(which I carry in a separate pocket, depending on the light). Disadvantages: None I can think of. This one has become my constant companion.

I bought the XA in 1979. Sold it in 1984. I bought a few of them used sometimes in the 21st century. I only have 1 that is in perfect condition. When I first got the camera back in 79 I took a lot of pictures that had my finger in it. I don't do that any more but the biggest short coming of the XA is the flash. I can't use any flash except the A11 or A16 which I have both. Also when using flash you are restricted to f/3.5 only.

I rarely ever use a flash, since 99% of my photography is outdoors/available light. When I do use one it's usually in a close up fill flash situation(like wildflowers), so the A11 is fine for that.

Loved my XA. Before cell phones, it was always in my pocket ready to cover my life events. Easily blew up some photos to 16x20, still sharp. Wonder why Olympus can't make a no-frills FF rangefinder digital that small?

I just had an XA photo blown up to 11"X14" with great results. I don't think I've ever heard of a digital rangefinder being made by anyone. Olympus did make a number of film P&S based on the design that these days are selling for inflated prices.

The thickness of the sensor plus the electronic behind the sensor. Olympus isn't into FF but I think the the Sony RX-1 is close in size.

I think my search for the perfect 35mm film pocket... (show quote)

Never considered an FF camera; but I can see the appeal. Might have to change my mind.
