I had my EOS 80D returned to me because the flash was not working. I was told flash popped up, but the actual flash did not work. Upond receiving my camera back, I checked it out, as I had only used the built-in flash a few times.
I updated the firmware and the problem was solved.

Interesting, yes... firmware is good suggestion... I have two bodies of Nikon 1 N1 one converted to IR and both bodies were unable to muster a flash. Hell to remove the popup... in time I will get ingenious and mount a flash shoe and play with the electronics. Altho, flash is not needed for the IR converted camera.
My Sony HX50 gave a pop and that was probably the end of the xenon flash tube... doing a search, not a rare problem.
