I've been trying to get out while there's still late to test out the finally acquired 1.4x TC with the 100-400mm on my Z9. Today I got there but there wasn't much time to spare. By the time I got on the boardwalk I could see the sun dropping as I walked. I got a few shots of a GBH with some nice golden hour sun, (not these), I saw another heron too far away for a decent shot as I walked to the Neabsco Road end. by the time I got there the sun was behind the tress and light was fading fast. I got a few shots of a very inactive beaver and some ducks and another heron that flew into the lagoon there, (all stuff I haven't processed yet. I was talking to another photographer as we slowly walked back to the park and about halfway There was a heron fishing just below us. It was getting pretty dark by then but I wanted to test my equipment. The other guy was shooting a Canon D80 with the built in flash, which wasn't really powerful enough and he was amazed at how well the Z9 was focusing in the low light and that I was actually shooting with no flash. Now I was up at an ISO of 25,600 and at 420mm my maximum aperture was f/7.6. I slowed the shutter speed down to 1/160 and was still a few stops underexposed, adding to the already noisy ISO. I decided it was a good image to experiment with so here you have the image as shot, processed with DXO PureRAW 2, processed with Topaz Denoise, (severe noise option), and processed with DXO and then through Denoise, (low light option). After which I did some regular Lightroom processing that I copied and pasted to the other images. I thought both DXO and Topaz did a credible job on their own considering the conditions but I was especially pleased with how well the combination worked. It won't hold up to the pixel peepers but it's not bad.
Original as shot. No processing.
