Emus in Australia

I took these photos of Emus in a wildlife preserve near Canberra in Australia. I shot these with a Pentax 35mm and converted them to digital with a Wolverine converter. I used Adobe Elements 12 to sharpen them up a little. These were taken in 1972 when I attended an International Congress of Entomology.

The first is a single male and the second is a couple in the bush.

Nasty critters, but they make great eggs! Used to be an operation near Lewisburg, OH that raised emus. The meat is a delicacy but the real profit was in the sale of the raw eggs. The owner of this farm did business all over the world. Never knew eggs could command the $$$ they do. You are lucky to have been as close to the bird as your photo shows. They do not like humans being near them. Smaller than an ostrich but just as nasty.

With the price of eggs today I wonder how much their eggs would go for today?

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it!
