My daughter's hard drive and backup drive crashed. She has to reinstall programs and data. She's in business and uses MS Office 2010, but does not have the original disk. I use Apache Open Office and suggested she download it. She said Open Office does not run Excel and Power Point. I know it does open Excel, because I use it and it opens older spreadsheets I still have.

Does anyone here have positive experiences with Open Office running Power Point documents?

Thank you for feedback,
Mark

I don't know about Power Point but it does have the Presenation function because I never used it but I know it would open excel files and it does have a spreadsheet function. I have made some spreadsheet using it. But I got my copy of Office 2010 running again so I use it.

I did 5 minutes of research on this. Open Office can open files made in the Microsoft OOXML formats (Office 2007 and later) but cannot save files in these formats. I can see potential compatibility problems when converting from one format to another.

Does your daughter at least have the product key for Office 2010? It may be possible to find media. I might even have it, but I'd have to look.

Do you know of anyone who has the MS 365 Family subscription? It costs $99.99 per year and allow you to share your subscription with as many as 5 friends, family members or even random people, and they get the same software and 1TB One Drive and can install the software on as many as 5 of their own computers.

Thank you for all the suggestions and responses. My daughter was able to find the office program on disc. So, other than the necessary work, she’s resolved the issue.

A member posted about TechSpot a few weeks ago. They sell downloads for various software. They have a lifetime Version of Microsoft Office Suite download for $49.95. Back then it was about $35. I bought it and am very satisfied. I was using one of the “free”packages and Word perfect w/Quatro prior to this. Check it out.

Mark, I went through this and it was easier than you may think if she had an official copy of MS Office. You can go to Microsoft and login and they will provide you a link to download the version she had registered. I could not remember my password and selected that link and they sent me an email link to reset my password then I could get in.

Check LibreOffice. It is also free. I think Libre and Apache Open Office were once the same company but split for some reason.

I use Libre and have used it at home for years and often used it to work on documents and spreadsheets I bought home from work created with MS Office. It will open and create documents in .doc, docx, xls., slsx.

It also has a program for powerpoint presentations but I have never used it. I would think it would be mostly compatible with those created with MS Office just like the spreadsheets and documents.

Back in the Old Days, when programs came on disks, I usually made a backup copy of the disk - if that was possible.

I Love and have used LibreOffice for about ten years.
Since retiring I only use LibreOffice "Text" (Word) and "SpreadSheet" (Excel).
LibreOffice has "TexT, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Formula, and Database"
It is easy to pick up because it mimics MS Office, except that I now prefer it.
