We have had an outbreak of avian flu in our local lake in Rapid City that has killed more than 120 Canada Geese. This lake is home to more than 2000 geese each winter. Interestingly avian flu has not affected the local duck population to the same extent. Dead goose carcasses are picked up daily and incinerated by park personnel to limit the disease spread. As you can see we have witnessed bald eagles consuming these carcasses but have yet to see any impact on eagle health. We remain hopeful and vigilant for the health of the eagles.
