Could use a little help

I have the lightroom/photoshop subscription with the most current updates. Looking for a little help if possible.

My problems is with the LR print module. I have 1 printer connected to my PC which only prints letters & legal size prints. On a different computer a few years back I was able install another printer without having that printer actually installed on the computer ( probably sounds strange, but stick with me) The 2nd printer had the ability to setup many print sizes that the "real" printer could not. I'm not a tech so don't know how it works. But in the print module set to send a print file ( say for example a 20" x 30" print) to my desktop and I could take that file to costco or ?? and have them print it for me. I'm trying to figure how to do that again, so far without luck. Not too sure if I made any sense here, Does anyone have any helpful ideas?

Use the Print To: (under the Print Job tab) set to "JPG File". That is the method I use and it works fine...the profile, if where you send the file has a profile to use you can include that in the JPG file...using Color Management.

To get the size print you want, use the Template Browser (on the left panel) to set the print size. You might have to play around with the Layout to get it as you want it.

There is no reason or need to set up another printer to do this...

The sad news is that Costco is completely getting out of the photo printing business. I'm most disappointed since I have used them for many years and they were very good at a fair price.

The other printer may have had a Wifi connection. I have an HP printer in my kitchen which is wireless. I also had an Epson set up as wireless, but since it was right next to the computer I plugged it in.

Your printer software should be the place to look for print sizes. Download the latest info from your printer manufacturer.

Thanks for the reply, the other printer was a printer that Costco used to have in its Helena store, just got the model number and found the install information, and somehow figured out a way to download it on my computer. As I mentioned, I am not a tech person and really did not know exactly what I was doing. Plus it was on an old computer that I no longer have. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Any online printing company can accept full size files to print to whatever size you want, large or small. It's not necessary to provide them with a particular size. Do pay attention to the aspect ratio and any unintended cropping that may occur.

Tommg, your post got me to thinking. Maybe some experts can further elaborate on this:
I’ve always just used LightRoom to export my post processed raw files to jpg files and using those jpg files for printing at Costco and other local printers. What features might I be missing by not using the print module?

Costco have now teamed up with Shutterfly and as a Costco member, you will get a 51% discount off Shutterfly prices, according to an email I received from Costco, a few days ago. You will need to set up a Shutterfly account which they help you with and is easy to do, using your Costco Membership number.

If you are going to have a print made by an outsider, any printer you may have is a non-factor. Just size the photo to the size print you want and take/send it to the person/company you want to make the print for you. They don't care what printer you have.

You can simply export the image from the LrC export dialog box as a JPEG image, setting an appropriate file size for the print you desire. Determine the size print you want and then multiply each side by 300 (most print houses use 300 ppi for a file as a base setting for printing). Whatever number you get from the multiplication, that tells you the pixel size of the file that is needed. Export using the "long edge" as that will be the larger number. Example: if the print you want is 10 x 15 (a common digital size) then 10 x 300 = 3000: 15 x 300 = 4500. Your image file, to obtain a print with a 1:1 ratio, is 3000 x 4500. There is some leeway in this depending upon the quality of your image file.
