What Can Happen When Parks Become Too Popular

Parks Canada has banned personal vehicles from Moraine Lake in Banff National Park.

"Demand to reach Moraine Lake far exceeds available parking. In 2022, traffic flaggers were required 24 hours a day to manage the demand for access. During the peak of summer 2022, the parking lot remained full nearly 24 hours a day,” Parks Canada said in a statement.

Here in the US, the Park Service is facing similar issues. Driving in a private vehicle to the summit of Cadillac Mountain here in Acadia National Park now requires a timed entry permit during the peak tourist season.

Yep. You are now required to make reservations in addition to paying entrance fees to enter some U. S. national parks.

They have gone to on-line entry permits to go into Glacier National Park now. Parking is limited everywhere so they had to go this method. For us locals, it is frustrating but I do understand why they had to do this.

I last visited Moraine Lake in July 2005 after visiting Lake Louise. Besides it’s beauty, I was struck by how few people were there…maybe 20 people in all…5-6 cars. I kind of felt like it was the quieter, better substitute for Lake Louise. Apparently its beauty attracted the crowds. Glad lots of people got to see it, but also sad to hear it’s gotten so crowded. jak

Probably in part a COVID-19 byproduct, people choosing to vacation nearer home, driving rather that flying, etc. jak

As long as the world's population continues to exponentially grow, this will happen more often and become even more restrictive than what it is now. As long as governments do not restrict population growth, all problems will continue and get worse.

So you're advocating that government insert itself into personal reproductive rights? Something like a two-child policy (like China until recently)? That's what you're saying?

(Sidenote: growth is not exponential. "Exponential" is not a synonym for "a lot.")

YEARS ago there was NO problem with parking anywhere in Acadia,
now it's a total zoo......
Jordan Pond House parking is totally nuts. We take the bus from the visitor's center.
(Even parking at the visitor's center took over 5 minutes to get a spot one time.)

My neighbor (only half in jest) has suggested we open our own private parking lot on MDI and run our own shuttle to connect with the Island Explorer. Between us we could accommodate 20-30 cars. But the idea of adding a popover run to JPH is a good one.

Now there's a novel idea!

A Lifetime Senior pass still allows free entry to all U.S. National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands for your full vehicle,(pass holder must be aged 62 or over). It is called The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. I have used mine all across the USA.

One version is Free to military and veterans, a nominal one-time fee for other passes, annual or lifetime

They are in the process of heading that way now. Read about the New World order and the WEF taking place in Switzerland. They have 5000 troops protecting 52 heads of state. It's coming fellow hoggers.
