I have a friend who is a very good Digital Artist. We've been having a discussion lately about AI Generated Art. He recently said,
"Art is anything that inspires the human soul.
How it is created is not important."

I was curious about those words so I typed his words, " Art is anything that Inspires the human soul" into the text generated prompt of Deep Dream Generator. The following image is what it generated. So now the discussion begins, Who owns this Art Piece? My friend because it's his words? Me because I typed his words into the text box prompt? I expect these types of discussions will only get deeper as AI programs get more and more refined from machine learning. Pertaining to ART, I think we are living in a exciting creative time.

It looks like something from Thomas Kinkaid.

You are the one who turned it into art. You could just as easily have used a quote from Plato or Shakespeare, but it would be your art.

If you did this again using the same phrase, would you get the exact same results? I'm sure different AI image generators would result in different visual interpretations of the same words.

Do you really own the image at all? You didn't create the image - you just typed in words. Maybe the originators of Deep Dream Generator owns the image.

Oh, sorry. I believe that Hal's descendents are the rightful owners

(Hal 9000, "2001 a Space Odyssey")

I agree with pmsc70d, above, you own it. If I type in something and it creates the same image as it did for you, I own it - let’s hope that doesn’t happen, eh? Let’s also hope that we both admit that it’s AI generated and that we add something else to it that make it more unique to ourselves, for that is the joy of creating images, for me at least. I think it probably is for most people but there will be those that will be happy to post what the programme comes up with and claim it as their creation - that, to my mind is totally different to ‘ownership’.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm in your camp about creating images. I guess one could use an AI generated image as a base starting point before expanding the concept into one's own vision.

Who owns this image. You or your friend. If I was the mediator, I would say both. It was a collaborative effort.
In reality I could see the courts getting involved over ownership. It may come down to the software developer, who designed the AI.
