Has anyone shopped at Abe's? I heard they are not an authorized dealer but their prices are less for a lens than other online stores such as B&H, Hunts, etc.

DO NOT GO NEAR THAT PLACE! I have been on this site for almost 6 years and all I have heard about them is that they are not to be trusted.

Simply use this site's search function and type in
Abe's of Maine or
Abes of Main.

The best advice is to run away.

Why do you think their prices are lower?

Run away at all costs from Abe's which isn't even in Maine, but in Linden, New Jersey, outside NYC.
Grey market goods, warranty-less gear, missing parts, and much more.

Just run away.

Abe's is not an authorized Sony (or Canon) dealer, so the products are gray market, which is why they cost less than the same products with actual manufacturer warranties, and why they can't be registered properly. Exercise due diligence on such things before buying.

From the Better Business Bureau:
On May 22, 2007, this company's membership in the Metropolitan New York BBB was revoked by our BBB's Board of Directors due to the company’s repeated and unauthorized use of the BBB logo and failure to eliminate the underlying cause of complaints on file concerning: non-delivery of products, misrepresentation of availability of merchandise, refusal to honor cancellations or provide timely refunds, unprofessional conduct, failure to resolve customer complaints, overcharging, undisclosed cancellation of orders, improper upselling tactics, and bait & switch selling.

Cheers and best to you.

Type "abe's of maine" in the UHH search function and get ready for an eyeful.

All you have to do is check their return policy. If that is acceptable, why not buy the lowest price. Assuming we are talking a new high priced item. Check the warranty if that is a factor in your purchase. There is no law against what the price fixers like to call "gray market." That is merely smart business. Look at all the Americans who buy drugs cheaper in Canada!---Is that wrong not paying more?-------ew

OldSchool-WI, read in my post above what the Better Business Bureau has to say about Abe's Of Maine, which is actually located in Linden, New Jersey, outside New York City , and look up previous thread discussions here in UHH to know the reality of dealing with Abe's.

Here it is again:

"Abe's is not an authorized Nikon, Sony (or Canon) dealer, so the products are gray market, which is why they cost less than the same products with actual manufacturer warranties, and why they can't be registered properly. Exercise due diligence on such things before buying.

Authorized dealers are all on the same price schedules for full factory-warrantied gear from the major makers. There may be a local, or storewide sale from time to time but camera makers guard and regulate the prices of their goods going to their network of authorized dealers. (minus taxes, duties, monetary exchange rates, etc. that vary by state, region and/or country).

From the Better Business Bureau:

Folks need to use their common sense and not deal with unscrupulous dealers just because they sucked you in with an advertised low price. Use your brain ,do the research and understand why they can offer such low prices. There is no free lunch.

Cheers and best to you.

You mean to tell us that a store with a presumed BBB write-up like you post is still doing business 15 years later?-----How can that be? Fishy? Show more of the file. Or better yet----people doing business in the past 15+ years with ABE of Maine, please explain your experiences here on UHH--good and bad. Were you hood-winked---cheated---run through a bait and switch--sent wrong merchandise and not give refunds as the complaint implicates? As for gray market selling and not upholding high list prices---more power to them. It is the other questions such as outright cheating which could be a problem?-------------ew
