When a capture is so-so, trying to decide what is the best crop is absurd. One does a better service to tell the truth, and give a possible alternative to be used the next time.

We learn through our mistakes by finding a better way, for the next time.

Then there is the focusing issue. It set to the immediate foreground, leaving the rest slightly blurred.

Add the third issue that is the shutter speed. It was windy that way, the overturned leaves are a sure indicator of it. Using a higher speed would have corrected some motion blur.

So, considering this, Can you answer honestly that one (landscape) is better than the other (crop, portrait)?

Personally, I say 'Neither, do not waste your time.

What one concludes from above is that post only if you have a thick skin. You get all the load of not-asked for opinions on everything "literally UNDER THE SKY." Relevant or not.--------------ew

Landscape. First, level the image. Crop it on the left--this will put the focus on the curvature of the road. Also crop it on top--you know, the two this thing--and maybe the bottom a little too.

My thoughts also I agree with you.

My winter screen saver is generally a photo reminding me of a nice, warm summer day. I took this photo last June and it's presently my iMac's screen saver. However, my synced iPad decided to display the photo in portrait mode effectively cropping the landscape format into a portrait format.

Which format do you think provides the better picture? Why? Would you crop either, further? I'm interested because several friends had differing opinions.

Hi Fourlocks
I have taken the liberty (see attached crop) to suggest, for your consideration, a closer up landscape - should fit your screen?
This removes the dark shadow in the foreground and too much sky.

Landscape. Portrait only adds redundant sky and shadow, cuts out the left & right vista. (I-Pad doesn't know photo...)

Then why should there ever be threads on art and composition? You guys who criticize---"criticism" when the thread leader asks opinions---could for once simply shut your mouths.-------------------

He simply asked which of the two formats people liked more, landscape or portrait. That's all.
He asked nothing about the composition being acceptable (or not), but people offered their opinion anyway.......
I'm surprised that no one made comments on exposure, contrast, vibrancy, .....
Some people cannot answer a simple question.

Yes - but a short explanation for the preference might be really useful to the OP and provide food for thought.
A pictorial example can be worth a thousand words, after all - that is what our hobby is about - and surely this forum is about sharing pictures and experiences?

Landscapes look better in the square format. At times a vertical is better, especially with vertical subjects but that is mostly used for those shots where a part of the landscape reveals what the photographer really wants to show to the viewer. It is called "the intimate landscape" in photography.
I like the original although my tendency is to warm the image somewhat. The intense sunlight during the summer months has lots of UV light casting a bluish tint to the images and your image is no exception. If you prefer cool images that is a different story.

I agree with the comments that the image looks better with the sky as represented in the original image. A rule of composition is to not place the horizon in the center, a rule that is broken often, in many cases making the image look better depending on the subject. If the OP is satisfied with his image I have nothing against it, we are all different.

There's the key... "I like it, but...."

Surely this forum is about giving others one's opinion, whether asked for or not.

A cropped landscape version is the preferred choice , but needs to be leveled. Cropping also removes the distracting
shadow area at base of image. As for being "centered" - it's not a fast rule, since the dirt road & stone walls lead the eye to such location.

....

What if the land really slopes?
Look at the black vertical post in the right center and the first tree to the left of the rock wall. They look vertical to me. But, maybe they're not.....
