I have a quandary. The current photographical theme for this year is "Energy". I have been thinking about how to portray this. My best thoughts are 1. flowing water eg a waterfall; or 2 some fast moving object eg a football player. To me, both of these don't seem outstanding. I was wondering if the brilliant minds on UHH had some better ideas.
Thanks!!

Forces of energy are all around us everywhere everyday. Your two examples are very good in my opinion especially if you can photograph a powerful waterfall. A lit lightbulb or maybe a group of colorful neon lights of a building would be an example too. A weightlifter at a gym would be an example. A tractor pulling large farm machinery is another. A tornado would be an excellent example of the energy in nature.

Good luck,

Dennis

Think about Thermionic Emission... Set up a Vacuum tube amplifier in a creative, darkened composition, and photograph the energy transfer of electron charges.... I am preparing to build an amplifier kit and things of this nature are presently on my mind.... A nice " creative " glow would go over well ....

My Panasonic TZ100 will do video clips and you can get 8mb photos. I took a clip of a guy doing pickle ball and the ball is leaving the paddle. The photo shows the rebound energy and the determination on the face of the player.

I like the idea of natural energy. Nothing can top that. Maybe a supernova explosion. That would take a lot of patience, though. : )

The online images for energy below aren't great. You should be able to out-do them. Would a composite be allowed?

A long freight train or just the engine.
A tug moving barges on a river.
Earth moving equipment.
A construction site.
Cooling towers of a nuclear plant.
A factory like a steel mill, even an abandoned one.
Big rigs at a truck stop.
A farmer plowing a field.
A cargo ship.

Energy is "the capacity for doing work." I think the interesting photographs would be the actual work; transfer of energy from one form/source to another.

You can focus on strictly mechanistic/material transfers, such as trees blowing in the wind, water running a mill, fire raising steam or melting something. The interest here would be transfer of energy between distinctly different objects. As opposed to a steam engine pulling up a hill, or a dam generating power.

Or you can focus on human transfers. Here you can capture the expressions of effort; weight lifters, football players pushing dead weight, runners crossing the finish line, or construction workers.

Lots of options.

Photographic theme from who or what? Is this a personal theme or from an organization?

You gave some good ideas shoot them and see what you think.
