It was an almost new 1948 model with very few miles (uh, feet) on the odometer.

When I was that age, my brothers and I had what was called an Irish Mail Car. Two kids sat on it facing each other. Propulsion was by means of an up-and-down motion of a vertically swiveling bar with handles - similar to the old service carts the railroads used. I do not remember how direction was controlled. Stopping was usually accomplished by the smaller of the two riders being thrown off onto the ground to the glee and cheers of onlookers.
