Remember Moxi soda? I remember the name, but that's all. My neighbor used to get it from somewhere, and he let me try some years ago. It was so long ago that I don't remember the taste. It's selling for $3.00 - $4.00 for a 12 oz bottle. I know the term "moxie" comes from the soda. any comments?

EDIT: I was going to order a bottle for $2.79. The shipping charge would be $33.33. 😂

The origin of words is always interesting.
I wonder how they came up with the name for the drink as the name (word) was never used before.

I buy Moxie when I visit The Vermont Country Store every fall for apple picking. They always have it so it still manufactured. It is sweeter and less bitter than it was when I was growing up. Check with the manufacturer to see where it is sold.

It was supposedly the first commercially produced carbonated drink in the USA. It was sold for medicinal purposes.

Not a favorite when I was a kid! I'll try it again if I see it!

There's a small restaurant and petting zoo near Brickerville PA, which is north west of Ephrata PA, called the Pretzel Hut that sells Moxie soda. They have a nice collection of older Coca Cola memorabilia in the restaurant. I tried Moxie once out of curiosity. It's definitely an acquired taste. Personally, I don't understand how anyone can drink the stuff, it's pretty disgusting, for a soft drink.

If anyone is familiar with the Middle Creek Wildlife area, which is famous for the hundreds of thousands of snow geese and swans that stop there every spring on there way back north, The Pretzel Hut is about a mile or so from there. I believe they are currently temporary closed for the winter.

In the late 40’s my dad had 40 - 50 old time wooden crates (held 24 Moxie bottles in the back room storage room). I can’t remember the selling price, but it was cheaper than Coke or Pepsi. I don’t think we ever sold all the cases.

I had lots of “Moxie” in those days.

They still have Moxie Soda in vending machines all over Maine. To me it has a bit of cinnamon in the taste.

I last lived in Maine about 11 years ago, knew about Moxie. There is a Moxie Festival in Lisbon, near Brunswick. Here is the info for this year http://moxiefestival.com/

As Mark's comment suggests, "moxie" is a real word. It means spunk or nerve, courage or determination, know-how.

You need courage to try Moxie and determination to drink a whole bottle of it.

Moxie is available across most of northern New England (Vermont, N.H., Maine). When I go home to Haverhill/Woodsville, N.H., it is usually on sale at the local grocery store (Shaws) and at the Walmart. Usually stock up. There is also a place in mid-Pennsylvania where it is still made, as well.
As to taste, I think it's better than Coke, which I never liked. I find it somewhere between root beer and Dr. Pepper, but without the sweetness.
It might be worth a trip up Interstate 91 which follows the Connecticut River, get off in Woodsville/Wells River, then head back down 91 to pick up Route 4 in White River Jct., then across mid-Vermont to Rutland. Then either down Route 7 to Bennington, then to Troy and pick up Route 87, or from Rutland take Route 4 to Fort Ann, N.Y. then Route 149 to Lake George and then on south on 87 through Albany.
There's plenty to see and photograph along the way. The Connecticut River Valley between Bradford/Woodsville is known as the OxBow because the river wanders back and forth across the wide valley bottom.

I drink this every couple of weeks. It is available at my local Cracker Barrel for about a $1.50. You can also order on Amazon for considerably more. (12 cans for about $26 shipping is free).

The taste is rather unusual and very hard to describe. I think one of the flavor ingredients is horehound.

Since it was first marketed as medicine, the bad taste was probably a selling point.
