The subject was the IRS ordering the release of his returns, which you are completely wrong about. The IRS dos not release returns of anyone. But the House Ways and Means Committee has a perfect statutory right to to have and examine any return (as does the Senate Finance Committee) and release hem if in the public interest. The statute is very simple and clear on this subject. look it up.

Oh and if you are looking for a legitimate legislative purpose they had one--to see if Trump's IRS Commissioner was auditing he returns of all Presidents and Vice Presidents as per IRS regulations. Turns out he wasn't so there you have it.
