Step-up, Step-down rings

I have 6 Nikon lens for my Nikon D5600. All are equipped with UV filters and I mainly use a Nikon 18-200 lens which calls for a 72mm filter. I would like to buy special purpose filters such as a Hoya Green Enhancer but if I buy a 72mm to fit the 18-200 it would be unusable on my other lenses whose filter diameters range from 58mm to 77mm. I am considering buying step-up and step-down rings to allow me to use the 72mm filter on the lenses. For those who have used step up/step down rings, what problems might be encountered when using such rings? Would appreciate any feedback from those wo use these rings.

The thing that catches me out is having a ring that won't unscrew. It can be solved, but until then its pretty worrisome.

No different than a filter getting stuck.

I agree with one caveat. DO NOT skimp on the quality if the rings, you will pay for it in the long run. Buy good quality so that you only have to do it once.

Get the filter in a size to fit your largest lens. You stated 77mm. I have lenses up to size 82mm. But I rarely use filters but UV, 1A, 1B, Blank for protectors. I do all my effects with Photoshop. What is a Green Enhancer filter anyway?

No important problems, and Im a major user of rings.
If you happen to standardize on 72mm then that one lens that needs a 77 likely cannot be zoomed to its very widest FL when using one of your 72mm specialty filters. No big deal.
You wont be using your OEM twist lock lens hoods on lenses wearing step up rings. Also no big deal.
I have more than a few lenses that wear a "permanent" step up ring so that I will never hafta deal with the shallow cheezy filter threads anymore. Too often such bogus threads seat a filter by only 2/3 of a turn, but step up rings go into those same threads by more than a complete turn, sometimes 2 whole turns (or more).

FWIW i consider Cokin and other clunky rectangular filters and adapters to be annoying intrusive playthings for gear geeks. I like my gear functionally sleek.
YMMV ... but that would be soooo sad.

Generally no problems, have used them in the past a lot when using film.
Only when using quite wide angle lenses and stepping to a smaller filter than the recommended diameter will problems likely happen. if your 77mm is for a wider angle lens then that would be possibly a problem, if for a telephoto no issue or if a FF lens on your APSC camera, then that might be no problem as the camera only sees the center of the image circle.
The only way to know is to experiment.

Get yourself a GOOD set of filter wrenches (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=filter%20wrench&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ps). Make sure you get sets to include the smallest & largest filters in your bag. The plastic wrenches will break at the least opportune moment.
