Wondering if I should have cropped out the road in the background. Opinions welcomed. Image from Nikon D7100, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED AF-S VR, F10, 70mm, & 1/250.
I like it there, gives me a sense of place and balance.
It gives context to your effort. With or without it is a very nice shot.

It depends on what you want for your main subject. I scroll the photo to see what it would look like with the road there, gone and gone by how much. If your vision of this photo is the boats, then yes, crop out the road and you could even crop to the where the water meets the land. If it is the lake with the boats as part of the scene I would leave it as is. You could crop half way between the top of the photo and the wall and not lose the story. This would make the boats a little more prominent and the land less so.
Personally, I like it the way it is.

Good morning. You could crop out the forest area and still retain a strong photo of the colorful boats amid the docking area.
Happy New Year!

The boats and immediate water area was the primary subject. I'm thinking that if I would do that shot again with the same background perhaps I change my apeture setting to increase the bokeh. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks and Happy New Year to you!
No. It doesn’t distract at all. I’m not sure I would have noticed it if you hadn’t pointed it out.

Nice shot. Sometimes you have work with what you got, as they say. The background trees and roadis no more distracting than the foreground reeds. If one could have had a viewpoint of only the dock and the boats, that would have been an ideal situation. Crop the top and see if YOU like it better.

Thanks for your reply....funny thing the foreground reeds, boats, dock & water were the primary subjects and I didn't notice the road until it was on the home monitor. Happy New Year
I'm going to assume that your main subject is the kayaks. If that is the case I would crop out the road and trees. By doing this I think it focuses the eye to the kayaks. IMHO
