This is the second posting of photos from a Mothers Day Fashion Show I did in South Florida in 2015. This time I'm posting various models of all ages. Again thank you for your input of the photos I took on the runway. I know I'm not a professional but I like to do good work. I gave a copy of all the photos I took to mall management. They liked them & I hope you will like them too. Just like to hear about my efforts. I love the hobby of photography. As soon as I get my health back in order I plan to do alot more photography. Probably all wildlife unless I can find out if the mall in Melbourne does do fashion shows either for Valentines Day or Mother s Day.

Challenging with so many different skin tones. I'd open it up 2/3rds or a full stop for some.

Moving subjects can be difficult. Two thing stand out for me. Your exposures are inconsistent. This could be corrected in post. Also your framing could improve by not cutting cropping into joints, and/or cutting off feet in near full length images.

There are two major distractions for me - the sign, when you could have used the clear space to the right of sign
and you cut off the legs or feet of the models. Portraits don't belong here either.

The best of the lot, IMO, is number 9. The main problem with the others is the banner behind the moms. It is a major distraction. "Indulge" is a rather hard word to work with for a background. I would had the sign to the side if the space was available. Question: Would you have been able to stand oblique to the banner?

For those critiquing the background, as an amateur shooting from the peanut gallery at an event like this, the photographer has no control over the setting or it’s decorations, or any ability to direct the action. The OP worked with what he had. BTSIDI.

FWIW. Even those in assigned seats can maneuver the line of sight. As for the critique, it is for future events. "No control", well, it depends.

Just saying, a former "amateur shooting from the peanut gallery".

My advice is post-processing or Photoshopping can be your best friend in photography.

To my amateur eye, most seem rather soft on focus of the subject.

Just like to hear about my efforts.

1) Looking at the first image you got it pretty darn good considering the situation and with 1 minutes simple basic post processing you can make it even better. All that is needed is for the shadows to be raised for the model and a tighter crop (can retain ratio) to remove unnecessary background, presentation is important. I'll post an example if you like.

But, I believe you got it good through luck. It's sharp where it needs to be but if we look at where the focus point was it was on the right side of the neck and the AF contrast area consisted of black hair and dark skin, not ideal? This image was taken at 1/100s, others I have looked at were at 1/60s. It could have been that the model was still or almost still, I'll explain this more further down.

2) Looking at pics 4, 7, 8, and 10 the background is blown although a couple of those I have looked at the Exif suggests the same exposure/conditions as the ones where the background is not blown. Not sure what has happened here, did you use a diffuser on the flash for some and not others? Strangely some of the Exif is missing from these, whereas shown on the un-blown ones.

3) The shutter speed of 1/60s was too slow when used at f/7.1 and ISO800 + Flash with the ambient light at the venue. On some images where the subject was moving you can clearly see the result of the ambient exposure during which there was subject movement. Push up to 1/200 or max sync if possible. I post an example below.

4) Worthy of note also is the the background board shadow from the subject. If it's possible, and it may not be, the farther the subject is from the background the softer the shadow will be.

5) The image file sizes are far to large and this serves no purpose. Some are 15 meg, an image of longest side 2048px and even up to 3000 can be saved at around 800kb perfectly adequate for just viewing.

Hope this all helps, Grahame

Thank you Graham for your honest & helpful reply. You are one of the few that wasn't trashing the model or me. The camera I use is the Nikon D5 with a Nikon 950 flash & it does what it wants to alot of times especially before I finish typing relies. My models & me in the fashion shows are all amateurs even though I am madly in love with the blonde model but she is not in love a with me. That's a whole other story. Also Pete from Chicago gives me helpful hints when I post my wildlife photos. Thank

All look soft or camera movement. I would be most concerned with lighting and exposure on their faces.
