Geese at the local lake

Just coming out of a very cold spell. Temps dipped down to -20 degrees and most of the local lake froze over except where the creek entered to the lake. This caused all the Canada Geese (2500+) to congregate in a small area. Unfortunately this may have started the spread of deadly HPAI or “bird flu”. Unconfirmed so far but nevertheless many dead geese are being found. Local eagles, some we have known for many winters, have been feeding on goose carcasses so their prognosis is also not good. We’ve all got our fingers crossed for a good outcome! I’ve posted some photos taken recently of the geese prior to whatever this outbreak is.

Thanks for all the kind comments and for taking the time to look! As an update however, the state veterinarian has confirmed the dead geese were infected with HPAI avian flu. This will decimate the Canada Goose as well as the migratory duck populations. The incidents of this virus will decline with warmer weather. Hopefully the eagles will survive…

Wonderful shots H. R. Bielstein but if what you suspect is true that is not good news.
