Why would anyone buy anything off e-bay. It's a risk and not worth the hassle.

It’s not an eBay issue. I had virtually the same experience with a sale made through this site. USPS claimed that a lens was delivered; recipient says it wasn’t. I believe the purchaser. The lens was insured, but USPS denied the claim because they said (of course) that it had been delivered. I refunded the purchase price, and we are both out a lens.

Wow.
That is really sucky.
GPS here puts our house 1/2 block down the road and people have to be directed to it.

And for everything else, public lashing or public hanging, whichever is appropriate

Interesting. Over the holidays I had some time to do some reading. Being a science fiction fan, especially the older classics, I am rereading Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". This takes place in a future time where citizenship must be earned and public lashings are used to punish petty crimes. Parents are held responsible for the crimes and actions of their underage children. Those found guilty of more heinous crimes are hanged soon after their trial.

Published in 1959, Heinlein discusses a time when parents raising children were soft and allowed them to do pretty much what they wanted with little or no guidance or punishment when they did wrong. Many grew up to be criminals, often sent to prisons to learn how to be even better criminals and crueler.

He devotes much of a chapter to discussing the very things we are experiencing today with crime and the lack of punishment. Much linked to the lack of teaching responsibilities and moral attitudes.

It is a great book and story. While a movie was made called "Starship Troopers" based on Heinlein's book, it bears little resemblance. It shares some of the main characters and themes but otherwise has little in common.

Could it be that it was delivered to the wrong address intentionally so that it could then be stolen (porch pirate)? What was the time between ‘delivery’ and the package being taken?

I guess the lesson here is to to require signature upon delivery. Or, to ship for pickup at the local UPS or FedEx office?

I agree. I bought and sold on ebay years ago but the risks now are just too great. Low-value items less than $50 may be fine but more expensive items, never.

I once had a friend who bought an expensive antique auto part and received a box of scrap metal. Ebay could do little as the seller had set up a disposable account and could not be reached or held accountable.

No doubt. It is a great time to be a thief. My police friend says they don’t do anything at his precinct to investigate petty theft. They are short handed and can’t spend the resources on it.

Don’t give up on the seller. It’s the holidays and he may not be home or checking on his emails. I have learned on all $$ sales I do they get insurance. eBay has their own, at a lower cost than USPS. Hopefully this gets resolved.

We request that the package be placed behind the wall on the porch.
It is noted and I believe never done.
It would be easier to do than walk across the porch to put at the door.

Someone should have insisted on having the package signed for.

As long as these district attorneys are soft on crime this will continue. I believe in King Hammubari's code an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. In the case of stolen items off a porch when they are caught cut off one hand.

sorry, I never felt this way in the past but enough is enough.

why don't we just cut off their middle fingers?? LOL

First, have you been able to get written verification from USPS that the package was delivered to the wrong address? And if so, have you gone back to eBay with that information?

Generally, insurance claims have to be initiated by the seller; they are the ones that bought the insurance. You should have contacted the seller and asked them to file a claim with USPS.

Homeowners insurance is unlikely to apply since the package never actually made it to your home.

If you can't get any traction on an appeal to eBay, then the claim with Mastercard will come through. Especially if you can get any verification from USPS that the package was delivered to the wrong address. Collect all correspondence with eBay, USPS, and seller just in case Mastercard asks for further verification.

I had a similar problem, and had the charge reversed by the credit card company.

Although eBay does not have anything to do with the lousy USPS service, their policy is that if tracking shows delivery, the responsibility falls on the buyer. But USPS often indicates delivery through their tracking, even if the package is still sitting on the truck or at the post office (this helps their "on time" statistics, or at least the delivery persons statistics) or has been misdelivered. Not all USPS deliveries are GPS tracked, but if it is then that provides solid evidence if the package was misdelivered.

Note also that the COVID policies USPS put in place means that there is no such thing as signature confirmation with deliveries. The delivery person signs for the delivery. I am a seller, and I can tell you this is a major problem. I shipped an expensive item, with signature confirmation, and the buyer claimed they did not receive the package. The delivery person signed for the package. Luckily, they had GPS tracking, although it took a lot of nudging for them to look this up. I then let the buyer know that the GPS showed that the package was actualy delivered to a not so near neighbor. Luckily, USPS had GPS tracking and gave me the info, and the buyer eventually got their package. So many ways this could have gone wrong. On my end, I would have refunded the sale if any of this had gone wrong. That's how I keep my 100% feedback rating.
