Tobacco horn worm and moth

Last month I photographed this tobacco horn worm you can tell by it's red horn-munching away on my tomatoes. A couple days ago I discovered the the moth probably getting ready to lay some eggs. Tamron 90mm f2.8 and 5.6

That is correct!

White-Line Sphinx Moth Caterpillar (Hales lineata) on Hooker's Evening Primrose. Approx 1:2 mag. (1/2 life-size).

Those "eyes" are really spiracles (holes in the body wall attached to tubes called tracheae) through which insects breathe. They take in air and the O2 is absorbed by the fluid at the end of the tracheae.

Oh. I thought they were protection against predators (birds). You know, "which end do I attack" kind of thing....
