===== Question

r*****@gmail.com
Will cell phone cameras make DSLR and mirrorless cameras obsolete?

===== Answer

It is unlikely that cell phone cameras will completely replace DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) and mirrorless cameras. While cell phone cameras have come a long way in terms of image quality and features, they still have some limitations compared to dedicated cameras.

One major difference between cell phone cameras and DSLR/mirrorless cameras is the size of the image sensor. The image sensor is the part of the camera that captures light and converts it into an image. DSLR and mirrorless cameras typically have much larger image sensors than cell phone cameras, which allows them to capture more light and produce higher-quality images with less noise (graininess) in low light conditions.

Another difference is the lens system. DSLR and mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses, which allow you to choose the best lens for a particular type of photography or to achieve a certain look. Cell phone cameras have fixed lenses, which means you are limited to the focal length and aperture range of the lens that comes with the phone.

DSLR and mirrorless cameras also tend to have more advanced autofocus systems, faster continuous shooting speeds, and more manual controls, which can be useful for professional photographers and enthusiasts who want more control over the camera's settings.

Overall, while cell phone cameras are certainly convenient and can produce good results in many situations, they may not offer the same level of image quality, versatility, and control as dedicated cameras.

ChatGPT is very strongly influenced by what it has read (or rather, what it has been fed) - its training data.

Just think of you laying out $2500.00 for a photographer for your daughters wedding and he shows up with a cell phone! As you threw him out the door, how many bounces would he make before he hit the curb?
The DSLR/MILC is etched in history.
Merry Christmas.

I have actually seen a group of brides maids along with the bride using a cell phone to take their pictures. I happened to be passing through the neighborhood in my bus at the time and was taken aback when I saw them.

There is no comparison - cellphone snaps are just that and nothing else.

The level of denial...is about right.

Meanwhile...cellphone sales are uber strong with optical advancements outstripping everything else.

The revenue stream has already shifted.

AI eating at the top of photography...cellphones eating photography from below.

But yes, everything is fine...

I-phone and Android continue to advance - in the world of phones. The manufactures see big advantages for cellphone photography - which has it's place in the world of social media. Snapping everything in sight ten times a day is becoming expensive to pass on to friends and family. It's popularity will pass.
Photography and cameras will live on.

Our wedding pictures were taken by friends and relatives, and the results were excellent. I don't mean technically excellent, but they did an excellent job of capturing the day from many angles in many ways.

This topic comes up from time to time. Here is my take on it: A cell phone camera is essentially a point and shoot camera, with some limited telephoto or wide angle options, and some very limited exposure options. That is plenty good enough for most people.
But I have a couple of DSLRs, as well as a Canon M-50 mirrorless. With them, I can remove the lens and attach it to my telescope. I can use truly long telephoto lenses, or super wide angle lenses. I can take time exposures for as long a time as I choose. I can hook up external triggers for such things as lightning photos, or star trail photos. I have total control of my exposure times, ISO, F-ratios, and the ability to totally mess up an exposure all by myself! My M50 also takes wonderful time lapse cloud videos. Somewhat limited, but better than anything else I have.
So my take is, we should not be critical of either type of camera, or of those who use them. They both have their place. My phone camera is always with me, but my specialty cameras could not be replaced by a simple phone camera. What about bird pictures? Airplane pictures.... I use both cameras a lot, and love them all!

Interesting that the question of will they replace the DSLR is a question of the future. Yet the answer is given comparing present cell phone tech. Very short sighted.

Discussions of this kind always brings to mind the "Last Two Employees" theory. The man will be there to feed the dog... and the dog will be there to stop the man from touching the machine.

Better yet, using AI teach the machine to feed and walk the dog, fire the man and the dog will become the machines best friend......
