20 Years ago, My wife and I mover to Florida to get away from the cold and snow. This morning I woke up to 32 degrees in the Tampa area. A friend suggested I put on a Yule Log to warm up, so I turned on the TV a put a You Tube Yule Log video on. Although if looked great, it did not help much, I'm still cold.

Maybe I need to build a fireplace.

Wishing you all a happy and Great Holidays where every you may be.

That's better than the 5f I woke up to here in SE PA. At least we didn't get any of the snow.

I acclimated there after about 5 years and was wearing a ski jacket in the "Winter", just like everyone else who lives there...
Got so used to the 98° and 98% humidity that 50° was cold!.

I spent a month in Florida on a military exercise in 1960. It was in November and during the day you could go in short sleeves. At night, however it was so cold that we couldn't sleep on the ground. We had to get up in the trucks.

My father-in-law liked to tell people who asked him how he found the house here in Florida, that he strapped a snow blower to the roof of the car and drove south till someone asked him what the hell was that on his roof. He said he thought that would be far enough south for him, so that’s where he stopped. After waking up this morning to the cold and wind outside, I’m pretty sure he should have driven farther!

I grew up and spent about 20 years in Mobile, AL on the Gulf Coast. These winter events happened often enough that they didn't surprise anyone. One year Mobile got 8 inches of snow, and I remember snow happening several times in my childhood. I saw temps in the teens happen when I was a kid, and ponds froze over. My dad would run the sprinklers at night to keep the pipes from freezing, and the yard would be covered with ice the next morning. I am in no way comparing what I'm describing with what happens farther north. I'm just saying that the Gulf Coast can be surprisingly cold at times, and every time the temp would plummet, a local TV station would go to the beach to talk to people from the mid-west who were furious, thinking that they were vacationing in the tropics.

By the way, this article describes a polar vortex that happened in 1899 that dropped the temp in Mobile to -1F.

Remember traveling to Alabama in early 80s and had left our travel trailer in the Florida panhandle. Wasn’t worried that I had not winterized it… it was in Florida! When we got back home had multiple water lines to fix.

I grew up and spent about 20 years in Mobile, AL o... (show quote)

Yes it can. One year, 1985 I believe, we had 18° Christmas morning in Orlando, FL.
Rolling 3 hour blackouts, and 98+% of the houses that HAD heat had electric heat. Many older houses did not have heat.

To get a more realistic effect, you do need a CTR video tube for the warmth. (a la the good ole days)

But think what would have happened if you left it in Fort Kent Maine.

Better than a shelter half at snowy Fort Dix in January!
