My fiancé has tickets to the armed forces bowl game today. We had planned to attend together. I backed out due to the weather forecast. The game is played in an outdoor stadium. The temperature at kickoff will be 16 with wind gust to 40mph by the end temperature of 13 and wind chill -5. He is going with one of his buddies. I realize people from Green Bay and Chicago would think nothing of those temperatures. We are in Fort Worth Texas this is totally abnormal.
As the title of the post says..now I know for sure I'm getting married to a nut.

I was visiting friends in Green Bay for Christmas, oh, about 30 years ago. On the way from the airport, we passed the stadium, and they mentioned that they had thought about getting tickets for the game. It was -40 degrees! Interestingly, it was -40 degrees Celsius as well, as this is the one point where they are equivalent...

We watched the game on tv, and there were total lunatics in the crowd stripped bare to the waist!

When we were leaving to go back to the airport a few days later, the fuel in the tank was frozen... There was a guy lying under the car with a blowtorch, trying to thaw out the fuel line...

Samantha, there was a "big freeze" in Texas not too long ago and frozen water pipes created a lot of damage. By the way, frozen pipes are not the problem, thawed pipes are the problem.

If you need to protect your home, shut off the main water valve in your home and open all the hot and cold faucets. This will help push water out as it expands when it freezes. It's less than perfect, yet it is better than bursting pipes when the expanding water has no place to go. Fire protection sprinkler pipes in commercial buildings are most vulnerable because they are a closed water system.

The wastewater piping in your home is likely not to burst and you can fill jugs of water to flush your toilets as well as for your domestic needs as the drains will flow by gravity. Traps may freeze yet they seldom burst because the water can push up the pipe as it expands. The worst case is that the drains stop flowing.

Are you sure you come from Missouri? Your knowledge of freezing water in contained circumstances make me think you once lived in Canada. Excellent advice.
Might I add, most furnaces using natural gas and therefore an external vent for combustion fail when that vent is choked with ice created by repetitions of cold air in and slowly warmer moister air coming back when the furnace is not burning.
Speaking of frozen water lines here in Calgary Alberta we are responding to 232 underground frozen potable water lines. It has been minus 20 to -30 C for 5 days and then Christmas bouncing up to +4. Love those Chinooks but I can not imagine how many more lines will be needing repairs. These tend to be located in subdivisions built in the 1940's and are just plain old or earlier in the 2000's when the bylaw was changed to allow mains to be buried only 4 feet deep.

To let him go to the game with one of his buddies is evidence of true love. We'll ignore the cold issue. Have a very happy holiday season!!

Hello again Samantha,

I can honestly sympathize - but just a little bit. This AM we woke up to about 10-12 inches of beautiful (?) snow (we live in just about the very center of Minnesota 100 or so miles due West of the Twin Cities)) with an accompanying temperature of -18 degrees with winds of 24 MPH resulting in a wind chill index of -48 degrees! I really don't feel my age (73 - although I honestly feel pretty much as I did when I was in my 40's) and I am by no means complaining (well. maybe a little bit) but this type of extreme weather requires a somewhat younger and more effective circulatory system. Feet are usually OK with very warm / layered socks but the hands are the worst requiring several trips indoors for 5 or so minutes running warm water over my numb hands / fingers.
I messaged you several months ago regarding a great post of yours regarding things that happen to us / affect us as we age. Your comments were so beautifully and thoughtfully beyond your age (judging by the photo of you in the post) I just had to respond. Your reply was absolutely kind and gracious.
I just wanted to mention that.
If I'm being politically incorrect I apologize but seeing your photo this AM actually recreates those very same feelings and is an excellent reassurance that there just might be some hope for humanity after all.

Have a very Happy Holiday /upcoming New Year and all the very best to you and those you hold dear,

Terry

Personally, I have always liked cool weather. As I age my cold tolerance diminishes, but still I don't care for hot weather.

In cool weather you can put more clothes on. In hot weather there's a limit to how much you can take off. Not just a social limit, but a physical limit.

But any time you can calculate a wind chill, it's too cold.

Temperature dropped 50 degrees since last night and is currently -5° in Cincinnati. I grew up in Detroit. This is nothing. Sounds like your fiance` has good genes. You will be great together.

Merry Christmas!

Put it on TV and then you can talk to him about it, as he recovers.
