I know nothing about filters!

I know nothing about filters, except that the UV filter is just used by many to protect their expensive lenses. I just bought and received a Nikon/Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF lens for $85.00 off of eBay. Took it out this morning and shot this sunrise photo with it. Am wondering what filter do I need to use to get rid of the "halo" around the sun. Or is it something else like f/ or speed or ISO even.

ISO-100, 1/100 sec, f/13
ISO-100, 1/100 sec, f/13...

Here's something to start with:

You might have better luck in removing the halo in post processing. Google "eliminate sun halo"; there are several pages of help.

OK! I'll call on Lex Luthor and see what he can do about that! I'm sure he's working on something along that line.

Look at a circular polarizing filter. You will find several benefits of using the filter.

I wonder: When you looked at the son directly ( if you could, it looks quite bright to me) was the halo there?
Personally, I think it adds to the charm of the photo, and my choice would be to leave it alone.
Then again, this might be a great opportunitiy to learn what (some) filters can and cannot do.

Shoot in raw, edit in your raw editor until you have the look you like. If you shoot in jpg you will encounter more problems like this, and banding problems, that can't be easily corrected. This is because 8bit data has far fewer colors than 16bit data.

Hello

The best thing I came up with was to shoot the sunset real low on the horizon f8 ISO 100 SS 250 to 500sec. and a tripod
