I glanced out the window, and I saw this guy sitting in a tree. I grabbed a camera and took some shots through the window. I've lived here for fifty-six years, and I think this is the first local owl I've seen. It was pretty large. I'm afraid it will see my dachshund as dinner, so I got him some protection.

I'm sure he follows all the rules of safety. Still, the politicians want to take his personal protection away so only those who don't follow rules and the police who are many minutes or more (too late to help) away will have these pieces of protection.

Great shot Dave.
It is amazing how well they can hide themselves right out in the open.

Never underestimate a Doxie.
I've had them in my life for over 50 years. I had a 29lb, Black & Tan, male whose name was 'Felony'.
He would chase rabbits through the furrows in tall grass and bring them home.
He was a force to be reckoned with.

Enclosed is my daughter's Isabella on her first birthday.
Color is the same as a Weimaraner. When she was a pup she had blue eyes.
She's 14lbs now and has only 2 speeds, Asleep & ON!

Yes, that owl did blend right into the background. Our Dexter likes to hunt outside. He has a great nose, and he'll detect a mole, mouse, or toad and go after it.

That's a cute little guy you have.

Wow!! It's great you were finally able to photograph one of these birds. I've heard owls in my trees but have never seen them. A neighbor told me they have a colony at the back of the neighborhood. I sincerely hope to see one and even better to photograph one of them.

Seriously, if you have a small dog and there are owls, hawks, eagles, etc, always take your dog out on a leash and move around with them. These birds don't understand that the little thing running around is a pet; they see a meal. By you moving, the bird knows the small animal is not alone and a riskier catch. If you stand still the bird thinks you are a post, tree or other stationary object.

A neighbor in a different section of our subdivision was in her yard when a hawk swooped in and took her Pomeranian. Her gardener ran after the bird hoping it would drop the dog but it didn't and he lost sight of it when it flew over the tree line. The woman was devastated.

I had a coat made for him with PET printed on the back.

Seriously, that is a concern. He is pretty big, though, and he has long, bushy hair.
