The point of the article is that return policies are changing. Maybe not at Amazon, yet, but that may happen.

Not seen any evidence of change yet !

There was a story several years ago, I think in the Wall Street Journal, about how Amazon uses detailed customer records to decide if someone is a too-frequent returner, and their return privileges are suspended or limited.

other ways to shop/purchase.
Go to a store like Kohl's. The have a variety of sizes. 1 of each size (e.g. 6 sizes) They have a variety of colors 1 of each color (e.g., 6 colors). Therefore they stock 6 things rather than 36. They deliver the size and color you pick.

Go to a store that has a variety of the kind of things you want, e.g., a toaster, a pair of pants. Pick a brand, color, and model. Then either use the Shop Savvy App or use a browser to shop. Ask the store if they price match. If they do great. If not, order online or buy elsewhere.

When deciding to buy online or in a brick and mortar store, remember to consider not only the price, but the tax, the time cost, and the cost of driving. If one can take 57 cents a mile for business expenses in a private car, then most likely that is the low end of the range of actual cost.

I totally agree with you. As an example I went to Penney's a couple of weeks ago to buy a pair of L--v-s. Five pairs of 38x30 and not one fit the same as another!. Longer...shorter...tighter...looser. I will continue to buy more than one pair as long as Amazon allows it. Return-free hassles is the major reason I (and I'm sure MANY other people) shop on Amazon whenever I can. I don't know of any nation wide chain store that doesn't offer refunds. You nailed it Rich. NO returns...NO customers.

You don't mention which style of L--v-s you were looking for or trying on because each style of L--v-s will fit differently and also it depends on the country they are manufactured in. I usually buy L--v-s 501 shrink-to-fit and have found some were manufactured in Mexico, Honduras, Dominion Republic, and so on.

I enjoy going to stores and browse stuff much more than browsing on the internet but I can't do that any more. Most stores are gone.
I think Jerry is responsible for the (just kidding).

I know what you mean I wanted to go to Willson Leathers to look for a new leather jacket and went online to their website to find out where the nearest Willson Leather store was to me in Vancouver WA. and came to find out they had closed all their retail stores you could order online from them, but to me, it's not the same as going into a store and trying on to see how it will look on you and the fit is and style of the coat is and if you actually like it or not.

Stores are starting to re-think their "Free Return" policies. They say that online customers return 47% of what they buy. Wow! If I return half a dozen things I buy from Amazon over the course of a year, that's a lot. It costs companies a fortune nation-wide, and people buy items on a whim, knowing they can return them for free. I've actually seen places advising people to buy several similar items and return the ones they don't like. I think that's irresponsible. It will be interesting to see how this works out. Maybe companies could base the cost of returns on a customer's history. If one company makes the move, they'll all follow suit.

I do more canceling with Amazon than returning, usually because something will take too long to arrive. Amazon occasionally asks me if I'm willing to wait. Sometimes Yes and sometimes No.

Years ago at company I worked for, hired a lawyer from outside the company… to lead a legal effort. He came in with a new suit on… with some tags still on. When someone mentioned he forgot something… he said no… he always bought high-end new clothing from stores that never asked but refunded his $ when he went back home to his island… he was doing them a favor leaving the tags on.

Yes, I agree about the clothing. I recently bought a Large T-shirt based on the dimensions given by the company. I tried it on, and it's a bit too large, but it's wearable. I ordered a medium, so now I have two.

And after you wash them the first time one will fit and one will be too small.

I ordered a hoodie recently in a 2X. I normally take an XL but I wanted it a little larger. I couldn’t get it done up.
I asked about a return. They are sending me a 4X and told me to regift the one I have received. I don’t have any confidence that the 4X will fit.

The on-line (Amazon, Direct Buy, etc). are realizing the headaches of "returns" as many of the department stores have endured for a century.

A few of them, have adjusted their policies of returns. [No cash back, or debit to your credit cards or ATM's.]
They now give instore credits. I think that is fair enough. No wonder the prices in department stores have increased so quickly.

I could see the abuses of "open return policy" when the High School girls started bringing their [expensive gowns] back to the women's department, after wearing them for 6 hours on their (prom nights) and dinner dates.

If my daughter had tried that, I would have had a fit.
Not sure who started that fade, but it's a serious flaw in character of the high school kids.

Am I the only one who thinks we’re all paying for “free returns”? That they’re built into the merchant’s pricing algorithm?

The selling price by necessity must include the cost of the item + the cost of doing business + profit.
Otherwise the business will fail (assuming the business is not the government, of course).

Yes, we're all paying for free returns, as well as for shrinkage through shoplifting and other types of fraud/theft.
