How in the heck did this happen:

I have all my photo's on an external drive (K) which is a 4 tb drive with a little over 2 tb of photo's stored

My local C drive is setup with the Picture folder going direct to the c drive pictures folder which has nothing in it

I ran the Nik collection 5 update and somehow it reset my K drive to what was on my C drive in my pictures folder...over 2 tb of photo's ....gone ...yes I do have a backup but still!

I did a restore on my system to remove the Nik update but that didn't put the files back on the K drive

This is so weird...have never had that happen before.

So I think I will be spending a few hours coping my backup pictures folder back over to my K drive so at least I will still have a backup. I only lost the photo's from this last month....which sucks because I lost the raw files but I do have the jpg files that I uploaded to UHH and to various other sites.

I am using a Windows 10 Lenovo laptop with a 500 gb ssd for my C drive and a 1 tb D drive....the update did move the old Nik collection 4.0.0 files to my d drive.

Anyone have anything like this happen?

Bummer Cindy
This is why I do not have my backup drives turned on except when moving files to them!! and I do that manually after I edit my images!! it only takes a few mins.

I'm sorry for your loss, but thanks for the warning. I will not update NIK. I seldom use it anyway.

Sorry to hear this...

Try a restore photos App on K drive. they should still be there even if deleted.

Do you still have the card with the shots still on it?

You can also try recovering the photos from the card. You may get some back that way

Good luck

Chuck

I did try a restore on the K drive but that didn't work...in the process of coping the files from the backup drive now. I only lost the last 2 weeks of raw files...so it's not that big of a deal...I just wanted to warn others.

Did you look at the properties on the K drive after the issue? What does it say in terms of space used and number of files? My suspicion is that the files are still on disk.

Yes - same thing happened to me. I restored photos from backup. I noted that the NIK collection had not properly installed, either. Not knowing that the NIK install was related to the loss of the photos, I uninstalled/reinstalled NIK. Fortunately, the second time did not harm my photos. Perhaps you could take your K: drive off-line, then reinstall NIK.

So sorry this happened to you as well! I am about half way done restoring the files to my drive. I also noticed that the program didn't install correctly....it wasn't showing up in LR or PS....I had to run the NIK Cleanup tool to get rid of all the old files and then reinstalled...it's working correctly now.

I needed to cleanup my photo's and delete a bunch of bad one's anyway!

The part about NIK not installing properly the first time also happened to me. NIK was visible from Edit In in Lightroom but wouldn't launch. In PS, NIK wasn't visible. The NIK programs were also grayed out in the Windows Start panel. After uninstall/reinstall, all appears OK regarding NIK. Thanks for posting your experience - until you did, I had suspected my backup program was somehow responsible for the file deletions.

The reason I don't use a backup program!!! I back my files up manually that way I can see exatcly where they are going and it only takes a few mins.
The same with loading images to my computer NO program, #1- create folder on desktop #2 put card in reader, open files, drag & drop into new folder #4 remove card from reader.
#5 edit images once all are edited I turn on backup drives drag folder into the three drives turn drive off!!
I keep the folder on the desktop until images have been posted then put it in the trash bin.

I just opened a ticket with NIK to notify them of this issue. Maybe you should, too. https://support.dxo.com/hc/en-us?return_to=%2Fhc%2Frequests

That's pretty much how I do it except I never turned off the external drive but I will now. I always copied files manually from the card to the desktop....deleted the one's I didn't want, moved to my external, import to Lightroom and do my edits, then export the jpgs for posting. I will be adding another stop and coping the folder over to my backup external.

Plus I will no longer update programs with the external connected...live and learn I guess.
