I just got the memo that Christmas is near and am scrambling to get some shopping out of the way. Is it appropriate to get a 4 year old a digital camera and if so any suggestions? Thanks.

4yo may be young for a camera. Their attention span isn’t very long.
Try an internet search for appropriate gifts for a 4 yo.

Get him the newest iPhone, maybe a motocycle too.

Seriously, has this 4 yr old shown any interest in photography at all? How about a big picture book instead.

These days 4 year-olds are tech savvy, but if there is even a hint of frustration, he will most likely toss it in the toy box and never pick it up again. Now, if it's "she" rather than "he", there's no way she will give up trying to get it work.

My 5 year old grandson has a Vtech Kidizoom Camera (on Amazon for $45). He's had it since he was 3 1/2 and loves it...it's very easy to use, takes reasonable images and it is very rugged!

I guess I was one of those fortunate misfits. I was exceptionally careful with "my stuff". I was using a Kodak Baby Brownie when I was 4. I still have that camera and it's still in usable condition if I wanted to pay for the film. Since I treated that camera with such care, my parents, for my 5th birthday or Christmas, gave me a Leica IIIf. I still have, and use, that camera, although it's been rebuilt about 10 years ago.

So, it's pretty much up to how that child behaves and treats their personal possessions.

No, unless he is a veeeeery unusual child (Hint: just being your son, grandson, nephew, etc. doesn't count). There are always exceptions. Has he demonstrated any really significant interest or aptitude? If you have to think about it a bit before answering, that would be a "NO".

C'mon people. Why there's always those with such negative attitudes.

There's plenty of kiddies cameras in the market for OP to choose from. This cameras are specifically made for kids. All you have to do is Google kiddies cameras.

From my experience as a father and uncle, most 4-year-olds have an attention span of less than 20-30 seconds and are usually more interested in the boxes gifts are packaged in than the gift itself.

Find something shiny, noisy, and as indestructible as possible. Also, if the gift is related to one of their favorite TV shows, it should be a hit.

There are a lot of cameras out there below is just one example. My grandson has been shooting with an old Nikon compact camera from before he turned 4. I bought his sister at 13 a Nikon 7200 but she took less than 20 shots before giving up still a little heavy for a lot of carrying and shooting. So Jamie soon will be using that one. He does take a few with my 850 and does well. Turns 5 in February and we will give him the 7200 then

For a 4 year old, the best suggestion.
