Two points.
1. A 1 inch sensor will not give the same results as a full frame sensor under close scrutiny.
2. It doesn't matter most of the time. I invited people to pixel peep my 1 inch sensor pictures to really see that there isn't much missing. You're right. It doesn't matter to friends and family. Where it does matter to me is that a high resolution, full frame sensor gives me more cropping options. The price is weight and bulk when traveling. The OP is trying to get away from that.

While this is most certainly true, the RX1 has a fixed 35mm lens which means that the only way to "zoom" will by cropping... sometimes *a lot*
There are occasions in which, to make a decent composition, it is nessesary to crop so ahressively that the end result has only a few MPx.
On the other hand, the other suggested cameras have real zooms, so it is possible to... ahh... zoom, without losing resolution.

It is easy to end up with a few MPx that way.

Haven’t heard anyone mention zNikon z50 w/16-50 lens. Reason why? Just curious,

I am looking for a pocket camera for travel. I would like something with a larger than 1" sensor and a zoom lens is really not all that important. I am thinking about the Sony DSC-RX1R II. With 42 mega pixels I can probably crop to a reasonable size if need be. Would appreciate input on the pros and cons of the camera from those of you who own one. Thanks in advance.
My first adventure into digital was a Sony pocket sized camera, DSCT-100 I think. I upgraded several times to the DSCT—300. Touch screens a feature, great shots, & ready for that Kodak moment.
A planned pilgrimmage through the Baltics, Norway & UK for a month, justified an outlay of $2k for a real camera, a Sony A77. Took great pics still does. Again, no problems with it.
I’ve always started off with a spare battery with each camera.
I still have two of these old ones, tried to sell them but can’t even give them away. Bargains with two batteries & chips.

I have the Sony RX100vii. Worth every penny! My other Sony cameras sit on the shelf most of the time.
