More of the Snowy Owls from Oklahoma last winter. I would have like for them to be better but I did the best I knew how with the equipment I had. Canon 50D with 100-400 canon lens. For the most part I could not approach closer than 250 yards and many times it was rainy or foggy. I was asked to share more of them. I hope you enjoy them as much as did trying to get good Photos.

I think the owls are beautiful. It is such a noble bird. At 250 yards these are nothing to be ashamed of. You did well with the captures. Did you shoot in jpg or RAW???

Thanks much for sharing. I'm sure the experience for you much have been both exciting and rewarding.

Thanks treadwl. They were shot in jpg. They were only about 4 miles from home and there were at east 3 of them over the span of a month. It was fun to have them so close and we were able to show many others their beauty. Many of them did not make it back to their home.

Glad to see you have the same lens as I, maybe I have a chance!
Very nice shots Lloyd.  Question: Did you use a tripod, hand hold or car window support?

I usually hand hold but I tried everything-window mount, rest lens on the window , used a tripod some but could never quite achieve the focus that I would like. Good thing I had multiple chances. Thanks for asking.

I am from North Dakota, See snowy owls in the winter time quite often, did not realize that they go go that far south. I see them sitting on electric poles quite often, on rare occasions you can drive right up to them. It is true that they are very cautious of humans. They seem to be able to take the cold quite well and generally migrate only when food is short up north in Canada. It appears that a higher than normal migration takes place about every 4 years.

Yes it is unusual for them to get this far south. It has been 18 year since we had seen them. It is said that there was an over population and following food shortage that moved so many this far south. They were said to be young owls and probably so malnurished that many would not make it back to their breeding grounds. Thanks for commenting.

My understanding is that few if any do go back north but die here. Just Natures way of reducing the population. Thanks for the reply
