After using a Windows machine for some time now, I recently got a MacBook I use to store and post-process photos on the road. I also use a selection of XQD and one CFexpress card w/my camera and today was the first time this CFexpress card found its way into my camera.
To my astonishment, I was not able to import photos from it into LR on the MacBook. In fact, Disk Utility does not even see it as a storage device. XQD cards work fine with the same card reader, so that appears to be fine. I can read the CFexpress card on my Windows machine, too, so the card does not seem to be broken, either.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Anyone get any idea what's wrong?
Thank you for your suggestions ...

XQD cards require a different reader than CFExpress.

well, the one I have can actually read both XQD and CFexpress; as mentioned, the CFexpress card works perfectly well - with the same reader - on my Windows machine.

Three things to try. Restart your Mac (assuming you haven't tried this). Download the most recent NX Studio (from Nikon, free) and try to use Import (Nikon Transfer). Also try a different port on the Mac (if you have a second one) to plug the CFexpress card reader in. Maybe that port is defective?
Thanks for your suggestions, ricardo00 - I've tried them all. It appears to be an issue with the USB-C cable. If I use the one that came with the reader, the Mac does not even see the card; using other cables, I get different kinds of behavior, with at least in some cases Disk Utility seeing the card. Going through Amazon reviews for the reader, I am apparently not the only guy with the "can't (reliably) read CFexpress cards" problem - probably should have read them before buying ;-) the again, the reader still works well on a Windows computer ...
Anyways, can anyone recommend a reliable CFexpress reader for use with a MacBook?

I use the Delkin Devices (DD reader -54). It came free with one of my Delkin cards. Have had no problems with my Mac other than gets hot if you leave it in after downloading pics (I disconnect after downloading). I bought a much more expensive one that doesn't get as hot (Blackjet) but it is much bigger and bulkier so haven't used it as much (leave it plugged in on my table top Mac).
Not sure, maybe check which reader the company that makes your cards has? That is, which cards are you using? Do they have a reader? In theory it shouldn't matter but . . .
I use SanDisk cards, so a SanDisk reader may make sense. Thx again ...

I use a ProGrade Digital dual slot card reader model PG05.5 with my MacBook.
Reads both CFexpress type B cards and SD UHS-II cards.

Does the CFExpress Card show up on your desktop?

depends ...
with the USB-C cable that came with the reader (and which works fine on my Windows machine) the card does not show up anywhere (Finder, desktop (I have disabled that function), Disk Utility). With other cables it does show up in Finder and Disk Utility in various states of "not working", but I have not yet managed to get it to work on the Mac.
There seems to be a limited number of card readers that can read both XQD and CFexpress; when I found this one, I bought it w/out thinking much about it and was quite happy with it until last night, since it has been working flawlessly with my Windows laptop for some months. Not sure if I should blame the reader for being unreliable or the Mac for being too picky. At the end it doesn't really matter, anyways - the combination of Mac and this reader ain't working so the reader will have to go. Those readers are neither big nor heavy and having to use two - one for XQD and one for CFexpress - isn't a big deal

You can ALWAYS call 800 MY APPLE. And ask Apple.
"today was the first time this CFexpress card found its way into my camera"
1. does this mean other CFe cards that were used in the camera can be read by the Mac or does it fail to recognize any CFe cards.
2. Does the Mac read the card reader/cable configuration with the QXD cards?
3. Can you try direct connecting the camera?
4. My MacBook Air has no difficulty reading CFe cards from a ProGrade card reader or direct connection from my Canon camera.
I have no problem with my MacBook reading a CF Express card. Try a different card reader.

Is the CF Express card formatted as ExFAT? Macs and Windows can both read and write to ExFAT drives…
