How is Qatar pronounced???
I'll be traveling through there en-route to Jordan and Egypt for a vacation next summer (going a day early to recover from a 13+ flight and staying one day late so I can spend my birthday in Cairo) and have heard it pronounced, even by media, two different ways. I would think there would be a standard at least among professional journalists. Do you say "CUTT-er, like someone digging in to a piece of chocolate cake or kuh-TAR?

There’s a long discussion on the various ways in The NY Times several days ago. I’ll see if I can find it and add it to the thread

That wasn't bad. Funny you should mention it, though, because I "discovered" a new trick my Denon receiver can do (was just playing around with the buttons on the remote). It has a button that goes to internet radio service "In-Tune" which I hadn't heard of, using the wi-fi antenna (also has Bluetooth). I can search for any radio station in the world that streams. Just for kicks I did one in Egypt (going there next year), Austria (always wanted to go there) and Nashville, TN..my brother lives about 80 miles east of there.

Internet radio is cool - you can instantly go anywhere in the world or US and listen, and there are LOTS of streaming stations. I use an Ap called radio garden which displays a world map. Just click on a location, and it gives you a list of the streaming stations to choose from.

I've heard Qatar pronounced as "KUH-turr" and as "kuh-TAHR". I don't know which is correct, but "kuh-TAHR" sounds better to me.

My niece mentioned that...I forgot all about it - but the Denon only goes to In-Tune. I guess it's the same thing.

"Katarr" is what i hear people say here.

CA of cap, and Tar, of tarantula, but a very slightly longer roll of the R sound.

I'm in United Arab Emirates.

Technically, the "Q" is a transliteration of an Arabic letter for which the sound is not exactly duplicated in most languages using Latin letters. The closest an American can come is a "K" sound, which is fairly close.

Most announcers I've heard on TV say "Kah tur" with no break between syllables.

Wallen got it right. It is a guttural sound coming from the back of the tongue. Not a natural sound for any Westerner.

It's KUT-er but the KUT is said with an Arabic gutteral sound that is difficult for non-native speakers or those who have not heard the Arabic/Persian gutterals. It's almost like GUT=er, but not quite. Definitely NOT Kut-TAR.

Sounds like I might have to wait until next May to find out for sure, but at this point I guess I'm more inclined to accept Wallen's version since he's closer to the action, so to speak

Just watch some BBC...Brits have most of the world down pat pronunciation wise.

You Tube...typing BBC+Qatar should do it nicely.
