I photograph most of the home basketball games of the local community college. I donate all the photos to the Athletic Dept to do as they wish with, plus, I edit, crop, and print (usually 5x7) some of the prints to give to the players. After 2 seasons of no games due to Covid I am back at it, but now with a different camera. An R5 instead of an R. Been trying out different lenses because of the improved capabilities of the R5. Previously I used only my RF 85 f/1.2 L. This year I added my RF 50 f/1.2 L and my RF 24-105 f/4 L. Here are one shot from each. See what you think. All were shot at 1/500.
My opinion: I think I'll stick with the RF 85mm.

f/4, 105mm, ISO 5000
f/4, 105mm, ISO 5000...

f/1.4, 85mm, ISO 400
f/1.4, 85mm, ISO 400...

f/1.2, 50mm, ISO 320
f/1.2, 50mm, ISO 320...

I agree-it's the best of the three.

I would stick with the 85, but have ready the 50 for under the basket shots.

All those lenses work very well depending upon where you are standing. I also use a 35 under the basket, sometimes my 105, 135 and even my 70-200. YMMV. Best of luck.

I will sometimes use 24-70 2.8 for under the basket.

That works too, but the primes are faster! Best of luck.

True I do use a 50mm 1.8 under the basket too.

Thanks Jimmy! Actually, if brought up to 100% I don't find any of the three totally satisfying. Having been away from the game for 2 seasons I am re-learning things. Plus, with my memory......

This most recent game I used the 85 for the first half and the 50 for the second half. Both crop well with the R5's 45mp but overall I like the 85 better.
