It looks like a barn conversion or someone had a real weird idea for a house.

This is the story on the building as I know it, from pretty good third-hand information, so it may or not be correct--I cannot vouch for it as truth.

A retiring doctor from Chicago, who owned the land, was building the house as a surprise retirement home, and he wanted it to resemble a barn. The first floor was for a garage, workshop, and storage. The second and third floors, accessible by elevator, were the living quarters. It was only partly finished (what you see, minus the weather’s wear and tear) when the wife first saw it and said she’d never live in a place like that. Work stopped, and that was the end of it. It’s just been sitting there unfinished ever since.

Nice shot.
A window for any occasion- the double doors installed 15 feet above the ground looks dangerous.

The definition of "funky owner built"! What is that thing on the left side that looks like a monster's open jaws?

It is, isn’t it? Another view shows that the monster’s open jaws is a curled-up piece of metal roofing that is nearly blown off.

Great story and photo, John. I’m guessing the owner didn’t hire an architect.
