I must admit I like the first photo more, by a lot actually.
Sorry I don’t have any extra info on old rock cover art.
The first album I bought based strictly on the cover was the original by Black Sabbath.
The second was Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes. To this day I will listen to these in their entirety any time.

Oh, you're chatting with a HUGE Yes fan. They are one of my favorites. I saw them perform Tales in its entirety in Winter of '74, with a guy who briefly edited Rolling Stone Magazine about 35 years later (Terry Hummel). The critics HATED that album, but we loved it. It did take a lot of listening to appreciate the depth of it. Side four is my favorite.
I still have original pressings of the Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Yessongs, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, and Going for the One. I love to watch young people hear them for the first time. "OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS BAND???" They can't believe real music when they hear it.
Roger Dean did some amazing work on those covers, and on the concert tour graphics projected behind the band. Yes was a PERFORMANCE band, known for making their live performances sound as good as or better than their studio albums. There are some really good videos on YouTube of their 2003 to 2005 performances. Here's one:

John was great. I recorded a demo album for him in my dorm room at Davidson, and live in the student union, in 1976. He sent out ten cassettes, got nine gigs and the recording contract for that album. He made two albums that I know of.
Below is a photo from his first paid concert, a Spring Break festival on our college campus featuring five bands, unlimited beer, and plenty of sunshine. He was the opening act, so this was taken as people were arriving on the football field. (If I hadn't taken photos that day, no one would have remembered it... It was a rather hedonistic weekend.)
Thnaks for the youuTube videos. I enjoyed them
