HOW TO RELOCATE THE PANNING FROM
BELOW THE BALL TO ABOVE IT AND
WHY SHOULD YOU DO THIS?
With the panning head on top of the ball, you only have to level the ball to begin your panning shots. There is no need to level the tripod.
With the panning taking place below the ball, both the ball AND the tripod must be levelled before taking your panning shots.
Read what Acratech says about their GXP Ballhead.
“Unscrew the quick release clamp and put it onto the bottom of the head and you are now ready to use the the GXP Ball-Head to create level, single row panoramas. This eliminates the need to carry a separate leveling base in order to create accurate stitched panoramas, as you'll be able to pan parallel to the horizon even when using your tripod on rocky or uneven terrain.” I know Hudson Henry has a video about this.

NOTE: In all of the photos, the BH-55 Ball Head is upside-down.
1- The bottom of the BH-55 Ball Head.
2- A thread conversion piece is shown as well as a credit card that will be used as a washer.
3- The conversion piece has been screwed in.
4- Credit card washer is in place. An 80mm Lever release clamp and the bolt that will secure it is also shown.
5- 80mm RRS clamp being screwed into place.
6- Ready to go. The small white piece is the credit card.
7- Showing a standard RRS TH-DVTL-55B. with its bolt removed. This is the dovetail piece on the bottom of everything that you own that will be clamped. You should have a few in your possession. You may have had one on the bottom of your B-55 Ball Head!
8- Screw the TH-DVTL-55B onto the top of your tripod. Screw it on as shown – upside-down.
9- Clamp the B55 Ball onto your tripod… upside-down and go panning.
You have just moved the panning feature from the bottom of the BH-55 to its top. Yes, the numbers are upside down – get over it 😊
