I had an unexpected encounter with a feeding beaver recently. Some of the head-on shots revealed the deep coloration of beaver's teeth. Something I haven't seen in my beaver encounters before.

If you’ve ever seen a beaver’s teeth, you’ll know that they appear pretty orange. This is because, whereas other rodents have magnesium in their tooth enamel, beavers have iron. So, beavers have orange teeth for the same reason we have red blood. The iron causes the orange coloring in beavers’ teeth, makes the teeth stronger against mechanical stress.

Thanks. I was at the right place at the right time, and even had the camera ready. I was checking out the water levels and how much waterfowl had migrated in. The ponds were very low, and I was surprised to find a beaver there. He was mowing that flooded vegetation down.

You got really good pics out of that!
That one must have a good iron rich diet. Not all of them have teeth that are that "gaudy 😊" orange.

MtManMD, Thanks for your quality pics. And, the biological explanation for the orange teeth in beavers.
