I thought I had posted this previously but didn't find it in my topics. So with no further adieu...
I took this photo in 2008. Photo taken at Pismo Beach, California. Nikon D200 18-200 VR lens at 200mm @f/5.6 ISO 200.
My wife and two daughters are in the photo on left area closest to camera. My only regret is that this wasn't at 18mm to see how vast these birds were. A million birds is an understatement. The birds were following red crabs and diving continuously. The depth and length of the birds was about a mile out and about 2 miles along the coast. The noise was deafening. I have been going to the beach and fishing since the mid-60's. In all my years I have never seen anything like this before or since.

That is a lot of birds. Though, since I live in that area was that actually at Pismo Beach and not Grover Beach or Oceano. Pismo and Avila Beaches have peirs.

Whoa. That's wild.
Indeed it was. I was shocked when we first saw it. I had to run back to my 5th wheel trailer to grab the camera. I have more photos of it.

I am not exactly sure what the defining lines are for the beaches but, we walked straight out on to the beach from the Pismo RV Resort. The birds were stretching from Grover Beach north end all the way to the south of Oceano. Here is another photo providing a view looking north towards Oceano. And then a bit south toward Grover Beach. Go ahead and give a bird count. LOL
