What are the advantages of shooting in RAW format?

What do you do if you do not have PhotoShop? How do you convert the pictures to JPEG?

I attached a few pictures I took shooting RAW and then the post editing process afterwards. First two pictures were edited with adding vibrant and black.

Other photos were not altered in RAW 6.7 but in PhotoShop using auto color.

Thanks

CP

For some reason RAW scared me to death. After working with it, I don't think I will ever shoot JPEG again. You have so much control over the editing process.

Becky nailed it. Shoot raw but not "in the raw". ;)

Shooting RAW is like being a great chef. You get to cook it your way.

This is definitely a time turning on location helps. In the raw Chinapaul would be an idiom for in the buff or without clothes.

Thanks for all your comments.
A few years ago I worked with a professional photographer at the United Nations and he introduced me to RAW format. He was using Spider Software or some other color calibration tool that calibrated what color RGB the computer monitor was showing to the standard RGB.
One of my concerns is playing with the RAW files and not selecting the correct saturation, hue, and dozens of other options in Adobe PS5.
I am going to post some pictures in the photo gallery for some critique on what files look better.
Thanks for all the comments.

I think that would depend on the situation. :D

Very nice. I like the first shot the best - good color and good angle to the head.

One of the best reasons I have for shooting raw comes from lessons learned. When I first began shooting digital, I shot only JPEGs. As I've learned what I can do in the "digital darkroom", I am restricted from fully implementing this "new knowledge" on these JPEG only images.

There may be advances not yet made in digital photography-- I'm betting on this by saving the raw files.

Thanks for the comment. Does the picture look like it is soft focused?

If you mean, could it be sharper, maybe. I don't judge a photo with a magnifying glass to see if it is razor sharp. It's a great image, even if the focus is only 99.99%.

I agree the first picture looks best. The skin tones and other colors look the most natural, at least to me. Nice pictures, by the way.
