Advice on new camera. Thanks
Thanks to all on suggestions and comments about new camera. Being an amateur bird shooter, Sony 200-600 seemed my best bet . So I bought it and compatible mirrorless Sony a7r iva that fit in my budget
I will in future buy the extender to get to 1200 mm. With my husband's help it fit my budget. Now I just need to wade through the manual and convert my Nikon brain to a Sony brain. Good exercise to ward off alzheimers. Thanks to all comments which I considered with respect to my particular needs and wants

Congratulations on the new camera!!! May you make many memories and photos together.

Make good pictures, but most of all, have fun doing it.
I shoot mostly birds , using a old 800mm nikkor from the 80 s , heavy , only on a tripod , cannot be hand held . on a cropped camera , a d300 and 7100 . Using a doubler is a near mission impossible , a 1.4 maybe .Dont try to magnify too much , the overall picture will degrade .At 600 you get a descent picture , that you can crop , [ without going too far there ] .With a 2.0 , any motions , vibrations become x2 .You will need a oversize tripod to hold steady .

It would seem you are already aware of the AF limitations of the A7RIV ....
Most pros will tell you that a 2x add on will cost in higher ISO settings and sharpness. A 1.4x does not suffer from those issues to the same degree.

Equally important, can you provide the required stabilization @ 1200mm ??

Congratulations on your purchase, and we look forward to your posts of successful captures!
I was shooting wildlife , mostly birds with my a7iii and a7Riv with the Sony 200-600. There were times I would switch the a7Riv to APS-C mode out of convenance to get that extra apparent reach. This past summer I purchased a used a9. Wow, what a difference in shooting birds and other fast movers. The a9 is super fast focus as well as high speed shutter actuations. Now, I almost always pair the A9 with my 200-600mm. I'm going to sell my a7iii, a7Riv, RX10iii and a lens or two to get the a1.
a9, Sony 200-600mm G
Some photographer couldn’t figure out the switch from Nikon to Sony. Good luck with your new camera and keep learning
