At the junction of Hwy. 219 and Hwy. 3 at Pickaway, sits an old Mail Pouch barn (second picture). If you look closely, you will see the faded lettering for 'Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco -Treat Yourself To The Best'. At one time, as many as 20,000 barns in the NE quadrant of the country (excluding the New England states) carried this ad, but today there are only 1/10 of them still standing.
At Sinks Grove we detoured to Hoke's Mill Covered Bridge, completed in 1899 and on the National Register of Historic Places. Though closed to traffic, the bridge is in remarkable condition. (I took the liberty of cloning out a bit of ugly graffiti--the bridge deserved better.) We then picked up Hwy. 63 down to Alderson.
The Alderson Train Depot, built in 1896, is on the National Register, Alderson Historic District, and is still a stopover for Amtrak's Cardinal run.
The Old Victorian Inn, also on the National Register, Alderson Historic District, was built just across from the depot in 1903.

That is a beautiful part of W. Va. and you captured that beauty very nicely, Diane! The prison in Alderson was where Squeaky Fromme was incarcerated until her release 2009.

I love photos like this. Well done.

I appreciate the kind words, Will. We thought about going by the prison but drove up the Old Prison Farm Road instead off Hwy. 3. I understand Martha was another high profile guest there, too.

Thanks, pmsc70d--it's been rewarding to see how many folks love the rural scenery. I was afraid it would be of little interest.

Sorry Barbara, I just noticed that I responded to you earlier and called you Kathy. Sometimes I get NMGal and AzPicLady mixed up.

Thanks so much, Dodie--glad you are enjoying the trip through Monroe County. The first barn was just around the bend in the road from the delightful Willow Bend B&B we stayed at in Union.
