Can it work or will it, well there would be plus and minus on both sides but seems DSLR may be ahead. Then again who really knows as cell phones are limited in some areas such as distance, wide angle, etc. Then we have to add in storage. But just my 2 cents and we all will decide what works best for each of us. Let's not forget mirrorless cameras.

And people will buy what they want.
Sometimes even what others tell them to buy.

The positive for a cell phone has to be convenience, speed, weight, and its sharing advantages... the single con has to be the light gathering disadvantage from its small sensor size. You would assume a pro photographer with top gear would come up with a superior image hands down... but perhaps not.

Some of the most notable images today are being produced by the "selfie generation". If you pay attention to social media, these extremely tech- savvy amateurs know exactly how to compose their photos. Their weapon of choice is of course the cell phone, not a camera... and for uploading and sharing it provides instant Karma...
Training in composure and the skill to understand content comes at a very young age today.

Photographers seem to intoxicate themselves with today's camera's wizardry I think, while the youth of today put much more effort into the actual image they want to create. Ive seen groups of young people gather and get very fussy about who goes where... and the angle to best be flattering for Instagram. Especially true in airports or at the local park. We all all have seen astounding images including landscapes that rival any camera from time to time on (f) space book, and that I feel is cheating in a way, especially when I have so much invested and it takes a truck to move it around... they simply push a button and giggle as they look for the next opportunity, those dirty rats!

I have been often tempted into buying a 3 or5 lens cellphone at $1200 or so, but have resisted because of my 50 year experience as a pro. Now in retirement, I go more often to NYC theater and I watch people easily getting great exposures, contrast/color with their cellphones inside the theater at the end for applause. I need to set for underexposure for stages because of the darkened theater, but everytime I turn the camera on, they don't !!?? As i look over their shoulder I'm amazed at their shots with so little effort!

Unless the DSLR lives on your neck, or is glued to your body,
use the cell, they work. Albeit maybe not to one's requirements?
For the most part it's always with you.
You have/are going to get a cell, utilize it.

It's not brain surgery, unless one's nose keeps getting in the way.....

I got curious as to how many megapixels a smart phone has. I found Xiaomi 121 pro (I know I've never heard of the company either) came out in October with a, you had better sit down, smart phone with 200 megapixels!! It has three cameras that all have much fewer, like eight or so. But the main lens has 200. I think smart phones are sneaking up on us hard core camera only users faster than we thought.

I think phones in use vastly outnumber dedicated cameras in use, so I would imagine that phone cameras are ahead by default.

But superior in what respects? Everything in the world has it’s advantageous and disadvantages. What might be an advantage to me might be a disadvantage to you.

Exactly!
AND, in whose opinion....

Each has its own merits and detriments.

A through the lens D-SLR is just that. A synthetic view derived from the sensor, called mirrorless IS JUST THAT. A pocket credit card sized camera with a folded lens and sensor of 200megapixels and synthetic image construction software is just that. IT DEPENDS ON WHAT THE "PHOTOGRAPHER" is trying to create. Half my digital cameras are DSLRs and other half mirrorless. But overall---half my cameras are film. They all have their uses and strong points.

If the Sony division head is waiting two years to put out what is already possible and working---why is that. To get the schmucks buying a generation in between since two years is a camera and phone generation? But if making a billboard is your thing---get the 200megapixel phone.

I find that with the features of mirrorless, with its synthetic lighting and expanded viewing --to be hard to properly arrange and adjust a photo to what I could view right off with one of my DSLRs. And I didn't mind focusing a ground glass with the eye piece from my microscope for critical focusing on a tripod with my 5x7 film camera.

I am not in the business of sales with a job on the line to turn in $millions of dollars. I merely want the correct "axe" for my job. And there is much to choose. I want true colors--not the best synthetic program colors. I want a sharp lens not just a program which sharpens lines after the fact. I want to figure how depth of field can enhance my vision----not a button labelled "bokah." Already my Olympus Pen 3 has too many "synthetic choices" and is hard to separate the standard adjustments of focus--aperture--speed--ISO. They have already gone beyond usefulness. So--don't expect to still be called a photographer when 2024 come to Sony phones???----(at best you will be only an operator.)---------ew

I'm a D3s and D850 owner and love them both for what the capabilites each provides. I bought the Samsung S22 ultra 4 months ago and this phone has 108 mp camera with 5 lenses on the back for all different shooting. I was impressed with the pictures this phone can shoot. People will be like Wow look how clear and sharp that picture is from your phone. But for action, birds and other situations I still want my dslr in my hand

Exciting times. Let’s hope he is right. I guess it is scary for traditional camera manufacturers.

He has to be right. His company didn't make DSLR for a long time now and the surviving DSLR's are old and worn out. (note the SLT weren't DSLR).

Yeah, Yeah, we've all heard these silly predictions before. "Horseless carriges will replace horses", "People will fly through the air in machines", "Men will walk on the moon". With a track record like that who would believe any predictions about the future? Glass plates and flash powder are going to be around for a long, long time, and, the Cubs will never win the Series. Bet on it!

Won't be long and there'll be a pin hole camera with a 1,000 megabyte hole! I read that on the internet.
