6 places in Yellowstone, slightly off the beaten path. June 2022
Yellowstone is such a large, spectacular and interesting place; understatement. For our 4th visit here, I had decided to visit several places we had not explored; the little(?) less visited areas. We arrived on June 07, 2022, at approximately 1:30 P.M., at the south entrance.
Here are a few of the 'less visited' places we found. We only got to about 1/2 of the places in the park that I had wanted to visit in the 3 1/2 days I allowed there. But getting caught in the middle of two(!) bison road 'jams', was quite exciting!!! Think Bison Herd in FRONT, BEHIND, AND within arms reach on BOTH sides, simultaneously! That was a blast! The two grand-kids were ecstatic! Well, so were we, lol. On the day we left West Yellowstone, Saturday June 11, 2022, it was sprinkling rain... THE FLOOD occurred 48 hours later!
I had also wanted to drive over the Beartooth Hwy, again, but it was closed due to a 6' snow the previous weekend, and then added another 2' mid-week. It opened late that Friday, too late to drive over for us. I would need 4++ hours for that drive! Sigh, oh well, there is always next time. Interesting side note: The snow that prevented me going over the Beartooth, was a significant part of the reason for the FLOOD! 2 to 3 inches of Warm rain + lots of snow melting = FLOOD!
https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/national-international/changing-climate/from-dry-to-deluge-how-heavy-snow-rain-flooded-yellowstone/3274641/ I did manage to take a few(?) shots, so I have been doing a lot of post processing! These were processed using NIKONS' NX STUDIO. Quite a learning curve, and missing a few features I hope to see added in the future, (like grid lines when leveling, and optional cloning for spot removal). Definitely different from Lightroom, and PS6. I did use Photoshop to add my 'mark' (see if you can find them). I do like how NX STUDIO rendered the colors, though not always perfect, mostly better than LR to my eyes. But then I am no expert! All were shot hand held, using my Nikon D850.
The Moose Falls is 1st waterfall encountered when entering the South Entrance. This shot of Moose Falls is a short walk down a twisting, wooded trail. A 20 minute walk, round trip.

Lewis Lake still has lots of winters ice, 7th of June. A 10 minute walk, round trip.

Firehole Spring, Firehole Lake Drive. Quite interesting to watch! Constantly sending up large boiling bursts, most disappear right before breaking the surface. 5 minutes, round trip.

Norris Geyser Basin, did you miss seeing this spot? Nuphar Lake in the Norris Geyser Basin Trail to the Norris Campground, near the Porkchop Geyser. A 15 minute walk (or 2+ hours!), round trip.

Sheepeater Cliff Trail: A Yellow Bellied Marmot; 'Home with a view' of the Gardiner River! A very pretty gorge and falls! The Marmot loved posing for me! (I think it was asking "Is this my best pose?"). A 45 minute walk, round trip.

Near the Bunsen Peak parking area, is this small lake. The shoreline snowbank, was quite photogenic, in MHO. This is maybe 1/4 mile south of the Golden Gate bridge (south of Mammoth Hot Springs).. A 10 minute walk, round trip.

The last time I was in Yellowstone a park ranger told me that by staying on the roadways in the park you will see 1% of the park. Then she added that 99% of Yellowstone is "off the beaten path." You were lucky enough to find these six and we are lucky to see what you found! Your six are areas I had missed. Having been there allows me to visualize what you have captured. Thanx for the "after-visit visit!
Nice write up & photos. Thanks for the tour.

It really does offer much more than can be seen from the road. These are mostly very close to the road, yet few people stopped to check them out. Only a 'little out of the way', but oh so interesting and pretty!
